Hey there anybody, hope anyone has either experience or opinions on this "issue." Here's a simple question about counting the days on a calendar, to be exact 15 days or "one-half month" to be precise.

Let's say you paid "exactly 1/2 months rent (15 days)" on the 13th of August which would allow you "exactly 15 full days" for which you paid, and after you would be moved out.

Question, paying on the 13th, 15 full days would land you on what day as the final day? Would you say that Friday August 27th is the last day or that Saturday the 28th is the last day? Furthermore --> would you say that you should be OUT by morning or nightime of that day? (For example, if you said 26th is the last day, that means you should not at all be in sight by the start of the morning of the 26th, or that you should actually have until 11:59pm of that night on the 26th to be completely out?)

Asking the question to see if we have different counting styles in our countries as opposed to here in Korea. Seems I have a bit of a disagreement, but not a terrible argument, with the landlord and everything is still unclear. I will say what I thought was right soon. Thanks ahead of time if anyone has a thought.

We see advertisements saying "open 25 hours," but we also see advertisements saying "open 24 hours."
In Spanish-speaking culture, they consistently count both end points.

Lest we sneer at other cultures for this practice, let us remember that the same practice is followed in music theory. A fifth is an interval of five steps counting both end points.

If 13=1 then 27=15. You should be out that evening.

3 votes are for Friday end of day and only one person agreed with me that it would be Saturday. I didn't vote since I want to hear what others thought.

Here's what I thought: sometime Saturday. Because if you pay on the first day, one full day I thought wouldn't be until mid or end of next day. So from the 13th to the 14th would be one day, and through the 28th I thought would be 15 days. I kind of figured it sort of like when you stay at a hotel, hotels usually require a noon checkout though.

To use "ajuma's" counting, if you paid on the 1st of the month, then the same time on the 2nd of the month would be one full day, and then basically the same time on the 16th would be the 15th day, therefore I would think from the 1st through the 16th would be 15 days.

But anyways the landlord has sided with you 3 posters, "Friday night" in her very broken and sketchy Konglish, which really means hurry up or something(??) Anyways gotta go finish up some moving....

Maybe I've been in Korea too long, but I understand her way of counting. The 13th lasts from midnight until 11:59 pm. It doesn't matter what time you paid for/occupied the space.

Maybe I've been American too long and expect people to work out some kind of acceptable arrangement... rather than trying to screw ya just for the hell of it.


I never thought I'd say this, but maybe screwing isn't such a good national past time.

Maybe it's not an effort to "screw" anyone...but just a difference in culture. She saw "15 days" one way, and the OP a different way. Perhaps if one or the other were more fluent, they could have come to some kind of "acceptable arrangement".
