We went thru the USO, and the tour was fantastic. GO to their web site, or call them up. It was really worth while. Takes a few days to make a reservation, and you need your passport, and you have to dress decently, no t shirts, no low cut clothing, and i cant remember if you can wear sneekers, but no dungarees. |

If you're thinking of the USo tour, do it NOW. The US military will be withdrawing from the DMZ soon, leaving it in Korean hands, and somehow, I doubt that they'll be offering any tours. |

There will be a small contingent of US soldiers left there - I guess to continue the tours.

I have a Korean friend who works in Seoul as a tour guide. She takes tours up to the DMZ - I haven't gone yet, so I'm not sure how much it costs. There are a few Korean tour companies going up there so you shouldn't have any trouble finding someone.
If you want, I can give you her company's details. |

Ditto this. The USO tour was fantastic--it was even worth dressing up a bit on a humid day. I believe it is the only tour that takes you to Panmunjam. The private companies only go 3rd Infantry Tunnel and some of the observation points. If you're interested, PM me and I'll send you a link to my website with pictures from my tour back in June. |

I did this a couple months ago with the Korea Travel Bureau. I went to their office at the Lotte Hotel (3rd floor) near City Hall. It costs about 70,000W (or something around there--I Can't remember exactly). It was a big group of about 20% Americans and 80% Japanese (which was kind of strange because the tour guides went out of the way to keep us segregated -- they had us eat lunch at separate ends of the restaurant, separate group photos, etc.). First we went to the observation tower, and then on to the JSA in Panmunjeom. We got to go inside the UN conference room located right on the border, so technically, when you cross the room, you're actually entering North Korean territory, although the UN building is legally considered neutral ground. It was interesting chatting to some of the American soldiers there about what goes on there (animals tripping the mines in the middle of the night, etc.). We left about 10am and got back around 5 or 6pm. Definately worth the trip. However, at the beginning of this summer, both sides stopped broadcasting audio propaganda with loudspeakers across the border, so it's a lot quieter now than it used to be.
The Korea Travel Bureau number at the Lotte Hotel is 02-778-0150 if you're interested. |

Went with KTB (Korean Travel Bureau) on the full day DMZ tour - very impressive. I did reservations on-line:

krats1976, it is not only the USO tour that goes into panmunjeon and the JSA. last october i went through a private company and we did the full tour. i cant remember the name of the company we went with but it was a fantastic day out which will be remembered forever. the cost was in the region of 65.000 won. most of the other companies that were there went into the JSA too, so it is worth checking them all out before booking.
cheers
