UPDATE FOR EVERYONE:
After reading this post some time ago and then forgetting about it, I am sitting on the green line tonight when I look up and what do I behold; someone straight out of an online posted picture staring down at me. Dog, military outfit, and all. Cept no gas mask, just a white doctor sick mask. Anyway, I don't remember what happened first, him starting to wag his finger ("shame shame") at me or me laughing in his face - it was pretty much simultaneous.
Anyway I laugh and give him the shame finger back, and then wave him on (in a "oh, get out of here, you joke" type way). He keeps walking. I decide to give him a little bit a 'sass'. I then yell "Wae?" out to him when he is about ten steps away. (Korean for 'why?' as in 'why did you call/talk to/look at me?'). He turns around and looks and turns around again. I yell, "Hanguk!" and when he looks at me I yell "Meeguk!" and raise my fist (in a "yeah!" sort of way). He then leaves the car and I proceed to have a semi-conversation with the Korean guy sitting next to me (semi because of English level).
So anyway that's my story. I have the perfect retort all thought up for the next time I see him, but I'm not gonna tell it to you guys and let you steal it. |

Dude, you met a world-class freak. I recall a similar man in Vancouver that rode around on a bicycle wearing a tinfoil helmet yelling at people. He needs therapy, you need to stop riding the subway so much. It's a cramped, stressful environment. People react negatively to it. Wow, a finger waved in your face. Call the Cavalry. |

i know hes a freak. hence the joking with him. hence the lack of even taking insult to the whole situation. hence the lack of even getting angry.
yet you find a perfect opportunity to attack me for even that. dont you love it. i find little difference between you and the racist loony on the subway. in fact i am a lot more offended by you, and deserve it even less. |

Uh huh, and you are so not angry about it that you are posting about it at 3 am. You've laughed it off and filed it under kooky Koreans. Yeah, sounds like it didn't bother you at all. |

I wouldn't recommend using panmal with strangers (freaky or not) unless you a) want to get into fights or b) look completely disrespectful to all around. I couldn't give a rat's what you say or do, just making you aware of how people can take panmal if you didn't know already. |

Sorry, but what's panmal? Mal I know is language, but what is pan?
I was posting at 2, by the way, and that's not long after I actually got back. Yes I was very upset, but it wasn't with any Koreans, not one bit. It's with you and the rest on this board who attack victims with no reason.
I was never upset until I got on this board and was absolutely taken aback by the responses. |

The guy on the subway is quite hard to ignore. As soon as he sees a foreigner he zeroes in on them thumbs down and starts ranting, causing the dog to bark and irritate everybody. Try as I might, I can't think of a good way to deal with him. Last time he saw me I was chatting with a few Korean girls on the subway, but luckily he wasn't getting on; he ranted for a while until mercily the door closed and we took off. I recall making a palms-up sign and mouthing 'wae?' but luckily we were in the middle of a conversation and I was able to ignore him for the most part.
As for panmal (impolite Korean), I think if one is good enough to be able to explain in Korean why you have chosen to use it then it's okay to use it in situations like that. If they choose to argue that panmal should be based on age alone, I have a number of quotes from Confucius to back my position up. Plus, the guy isn't that old anyway. And old guy being accosted by the crazy mask guy on the subway wouldn't use chondaemal when berating him, that's for sure. |

If you want to know how to handle a nutbar with a dog, rent and watch "Silence of the Lambs". |
