Where the heck is Goon-po Shi?

Ok, Goon-po shi is the same as Gun-po shi and/or Kun-po shi.

In Korean, ��. (hope you can read that - I typed it in fine, but don't know if that means you can read it!!!)

Goon-po is actually southwest of the river, close to the intersection of Line 1 and Line 4. About a 40 minute haul via subway into the city proper, but a short hop to the train station in Suwon. Gun-po Station, San-bon Station, and Geum-jung are all very close.

There is a good hike I once took going up to the ridgeline that is apart of su-li-sun in Goon-po city. Up on the ridge you have a great view of Goon-po city and some interesting urban development history. From this vantage point you can see three different histories. The old town of Goon-po is clearly discernable due to the building types, the building architecture and general cohesive location of these building butting up next to the base of a hill. To the east of the old town is a mix of land usages, the largest being of industrial usage, taking advantage of the rail line and no doubt developed to take the overflow from Seoul's Gu-lo and what is now Kum-chun industrial districts during the 80's and early 90's. Then to the south west and west in general you have Sanbon new town, which is a bedroom community fully planned out by the government. Here you can see all the apartment blocks you want and the associated businesses catering to these middle class dwellers. Sanbon even has a downtown all planned out too, which if I remember correctly is quite nice. If you live in Goon-po have a hike up to the ridgeline and take a look and you can see three segments of Korean urban fabric which makes Korea what it is, old, industrial, and new city all in one sweeping view.

It's a small community, but it's home to not only gajackson but also my in-laws. Glen - have a look for me this weekend. I'll be roaming around the neighbourhood. Also going to check out the foreign goods place in Sanbon, if I can find that post where you mentioned it...
