I have just had a dispute with the school that M and M placed me at here in Korea.
If you are considering using this agency, I would recommend that you wait for a few days to see the outcome of this dispute as it will show if they are honest or not.
My school have withheld a large amount of money illegally and M and M now have the opportunity to prove their integrity (and all the promises they make in their ads).

Please keep an eye on this board for an update next few days....in the meantime....apply with other recruiters also....

M and M recruitment said to me today that I left the school and therefore they could keep the airfare money.
This is despite all of us knowing that the school actually gave me two days notice that my job would be part time not full time as of the following week.
Of course my contract states that my job is "guaranteed minimum 30 hours" and "1.9 million per month", and I was being offered 800,000 a month and just 10 hours per week.....
So everyone knows the schoom broke the contract but M and M have chosen to adopt the arguement that I left on my accord to find a new job, thus they can keep the airfare money.
This is a prime example of lying recruiters so that they may keep the money from the final payment.
Is this what Korea is all about......lies and theft?
How do these directors expect to teach their children?
How does this Country expect to become a serious Global service economy with poeple like this around?
Dont trust M and M recruitment.

Unfortunately, recruiters generally don't help you when problems occur in your workplace, regardless of what they promise you before you sign on the dotted line. By the time you have a problem, they already have their money and are looking for the next sucker. They don't need you anymore. Some people may have more positive stories in dealing with recruiters, but they are for the most part few and far between.

The best way is to not deal with recruiters at all.

Also to mention J.B. is that recruiters cannot be expected to do everything nor do they have much power (how could they?) over the owners of privately held schools.

I know of a few recruiters that are honest and tell this to their applicants.

Furthermore, taking any kind of job in a different country entails a certain amount of risk.
If your home country government cannot intervene in cases where your job does not work out...why should recruiters?

Hunts places hundreds of people every month in Canada and the US and they specifically say that they have no responsability for what happens when an employee is placed.

The recruiters I talked about before are up front about this. A good one wil simply explain clearly what the situation is and tell the teacher about Korea in an honest way.

Then, it is up to the teacher, as a responsible adult with a functionning brain to make his or her own decision.

Oh boo hoo. So the school ran out of money and can't afford you anymore. So they offer you an hourly wage and include a free apartment. We should all be so lucky. In turn, you could have taken another part time job (in which this county has a bazillion of) and doubled your monthly salary.

Instead, you come on here and cry rather than proclaiming how you are the luckiest man in the universe.

Do you want me to call your mother for you? She can tell you what to do as it would appear you can't handle doing anything by yourself.

Given that it's rare a recruiter has to give a refund once the teacher has stayed three months, perhaps you could explain this one.

?

(numbers are mine)

1. How do we know this?

2. So if someone offered you a job, and then said, "Sorry we are cutting your hours and wages, but hey we are still giving you a free apartment..?" you would regard that as acceptable?

3. Doesn't your employer have to agree to this? Even if the employer did, we don't know what hours the OP had. It could have been some kind of split shift which could have made working a second part time job very difficult.

Mom, you are a fool.
I had two part time interviews for M/W/F the following day.
Both required a 1 hour bus ride from home and would mean bulk travel time each day, as the winter apprached waiting for buses to arrive and chasing them with 100 other priks, the additioanl salary taken by travel costs and meals on the run, plus the added risk of actually bieng cought teaching illegally.
I weighed this up and realized I really had to find a new full time job.
So I had to leave, and they tool this opportunity to make money on the deal...my money...money I earned.
Run and Jump you little fag...

I'd say that when you deal with recruiters, you're really taking chances. They want their fee, and that's all they care about. Most businesses come down to that one simple thing. And as for repeat business, who will they get more business out of? The teacher or the school? Even trying to blacklist them within this community here is impossible. They're nearly untouchable.

I've used recruiters several times here, and I've gotten jobs on my own. I will always recommend to go without a recruiter, do it on your own. If a recruiter screws you around, and you're surprised, well gee. There's a shock. And how much did you pay that recruiter? Ah, wait, the school paid him. Golly, who would of thought they'd side with the school?!?!?! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Don't waste your time with either the school or the recruiter and get yourself another job. Hopefully it'll come up better than the one you got.

Some of the older hands on this board, before dissing the guy, might like to recall their first few months here and be more constructive.

Not that I always am.

Zing! Your mastery of the written word easily surpases my mightiest of efforts.

Well, call me Captain Obvious, if you don't want to work at a job an hour away, don't apply for a job that's an hour away. Holy crap, you are lost without your mother to hold your hand.

Though most part time jobs pay 30-50k an hour compared to the 20k an hour you are making now (not factoring in the other perks you get like airfare, apartment, etc., which remained static while your working hours were reduced). If you work three extra hours a day, I don't think you can come up with enough excuses to explain how you went through 70,000 won in bus fares for two to four trips.

Further, don't lie to us and say that you cook at home most of the time, assuming the cooking at home actually saves any money at all. Even if you had to eat out once a day, what's a meal cost in Korea? 4000 Won if you want to go all super crazy fancy? Wow! Better call mom and ask for some extra money to afford it.

Plus who said anything about working illegally? Hello? Remember the part about having a legal work visa and an employer who is saying you will only be working for them part-time. It would be a very simple exercise to sign up other places to work at on your visa.

If my first employer said "sorry, we're cutting your working hours and giving you a little pay raise and letting you keep the apartment and airfare", I would be doing the happy dance.

Your post explains everything. You just can't handle things not being neatly organized for you. If we were to open up a wagering pool, I would bet that you went straight from university and living at home to Korea being your first important job and time away from home. Everything you type screams of being helpless, and I would be genuinly surprised if I was wrong.

Great. You couldn't handle the freedom. Why blame others for your own shortcomings? A sizable percentage of people who win the lotto can't handle the sudden influx of cash and take active roles in collapsing their worlds.

Oh please, kind sir, I can't handle such written trounces aimed at me. I implore you to cease your masterful attacks at me. I cannot possibly survive when such venomous words are thrown against me.

That's true. However, in the long run, recruiters could do a lot more to raise the chances of fair treatment in the schools where they place teachers, especially when so many of them promise to provide teachers with "reputable" schools. For starters, they can take complaints from teachers seriously, and although there's nothing much they can do for those particular cases, they can decide to no longer do business with schools where their teachers are being screwed. Unfortunately, most recruiters care more about making more money from as many schools as possible rather than paying too close attention to the treatment of teachers.

Using a recruiter is a bad idea, almost all the time. First of all, there are SO many jobs out there that can be had without the services of a recruiter, so why bother?

Second, the school is paying them, you're not, so who do you think they'll side with if there's a dispute?

Third, they get paid if they place someone--basically anyone--in a position, and their objective is to get you to take the position. They'll pretty much say anything to place you in the school so they can get their money.

And what do you mean he gets to "keep your airfare money"? You paid the money for the plane ticket and expected reimbursement? Bad idea. Always make them mail you a ticket.
