This hoary old apologist gem is about as logical and reasonable as the hoary old whiner gem "If you don't like to hear complaints about Korea don't come to this website" ... |

"Apologist"...can't you come up with something new? I am not apologizing for anything. I like this place...have a great life here. If you don't, then leave. It's not your country, so just go. If you don't like being in a foreign country, then what, please tell, is your logic for staying and crying about it?
Who does that?
"I hate this place passionately."
"Then go."
"No...I will stay and whine endlessly. Apologist."
Only a fool behaves this way...a fool or a lazy, apathetic person.
You are correct about one thing though....it is a gem because it is rock solid, priceless and never decreases in value.
Have a crappy day and do nothing to change that.

What drives me crazy is whining and whingeing waeguk co-workers. They're generally harder to work with, and not as nice as the koreans. They usually demand this and that, but forget to give at the same time.
Whingeing is a highly unnatractive thing to listen to, especially when its from people who've taken no effort to learn much about Korea, treat their job like trash, and have taken no positive steps to improve their lot.
Its actually possible to make happy changes to your situation if you are diplomatic with Koreans. A lot of people don't express themselves calmly when things bug them- instead they say nothing and eventually let stress build up into a huge burden, resulting in a fight or argument.
With your boss and many other scenarios, its entirely possible to win them over if you know how to negotiate assertively and positively. Hold your ground, but remain calm, objective, and open to seeing their point of view as well.
I know it sounds wierd coming from me, because I do vent on here a fair bit. But in daily life here I'm fair and balanced in my approach.. |

I never thought some people think "linear" and other people "circular" and I think that's pretty funny. But if I thought cicular then I never would have thought it funny in the first place. Kind of confusing that one.
If I thought linear then chances are i'd actually think the circular thinker were thinking oblong because I wouldn't see the outer arcs of his concept or idea. Then I'd just have it plain wrong.

Do many other foreign cultures receive the volume of complaints that Korea does?

Do many other foreign cultures have the availability and cheapness of the high speed internet cafes that we have in Korea? |
Totally valid point and deserves to be quoted.

Actually, the thing that indeed lacks in logic is the people that berate this place, yet stay here year after year. It completely makes no sense and warrants the statement. Just because it's old and gets repeated often doesn't mean that it isn't reasonable and doesn't hold logic. It wouldn't keep re-surfacing, if people effectively countered and dismissed it, instead of commenting on how often it gets said or side-stepping it altogether.

Nise post....I agree totally. Diplomacy goes a long way here. Humility and patience are also important. |

Ya'll don't seem to be completely crazy-Just irate and aggravated, that's all.
Now on the Japan forum, that is where they are truly psychotic....I don't know what it is about that country. It seems all nice and fun at first, then you figure out it's expensive, nobody wants to give you a visa, and most of the foreigners seem to be actually mentally ill. They have the highest suicide rate in Asia-yes, even higher than Korea and even third-world Asian countries-and yes, they have one of the highest "foreign teacher" suicide rates as well.
And then there's the Hong Kong forum, which seems to attract a lot of paranoids who are worried about LOSING their jobs.
Ya'll are in better hands than you think....I say this having been around the block.Nobody ever let me starve in Korea. Someone will always feed you or give you an advance, even if they hate you. More than I can say for other places. |
