What dates does your hogwan give you off for the holidays? ie, December 24 to January 2? Dec 25 to Jan 1? Only Dec 25 and Jan 1 (with working days in between?) Just wondering what's typical for Korea. |

Neither Christmas nor New Years are that big a deal here, so unless your hagwon has a weeks vacation to coincide with the public schools then, chances are you'll only get December 25 and Jan 1st. |

It is usually winter schedule so you might only get New Years Off if you are really unlucky.
Most hagwons give both Christmas day and new years Day off(but they fall on a weekend this year so it means jack squat).
At my last hagwon they gave winter vacation at this time so I got a 9 day holiday which worked out nice. |

OK then another related question...many of you talk about taking trips of a week or longer to China, Thailand, or other exotic places. If not at Christmas, when do you get enough time off to do these trips? |

During my 10-week summer holiday or my 10-week winter holiday. |

Chuseok and Seollal are the big holidays here and this year, we'll get five days for Chuseok so lots of people will travel then. Also lots of us work at jobs that give us more holidays than hagwons generally will. |

Or people do it when the finish their contracts. For us, we're taking 11 days at Choo-sok (we don't work Fridays, and the boss is giving us an extra day off), and then 24 days when we finish our jobs in November. Woo-hoo! Traveling to other countries is one of the best things about being in Korea! |

I get the same time off! 9-day holiday!!! whoo hoo! Now I'm just waiting for my girl to get her schedule figured out. If it works out, we're heading to Kuala Lumpur, Thailand, or maybe India.

Last year the Winter Holiday at my hagwon was pretty lousy. We got Christmas Day off, had to work the next day (Friday), then had Mon-Thurs off and had to work again that Friday. Completely lame.
This year, I have 3 weeks. I just have to decide if I'm going to Alaska to see Mom & Dad or Utah to see everyone else. I'd go somewhere more exciting except that a) I haven't been home since I came to Korea over a year ago and, b)I also have a week off for Spring Break (Beijing) and 4 weeks off next summer (New Zealand).
Have I said it? I LOVE MY JOB! |
