Anyone running an ATI card? If so then look into the "humus mod" at
http://www.beyond3d.com
in the forums under "games talk". It seems a bit complex, but it's easy and will give you a huge boost in shader, and thus overall perfomance at no loss of Image Quality at all. Could mean the difference between Med quality and high quality. Check it out.
This mod is not for nVidia cards...it may actually hurt performance. |

Okay, I got the game. Loaded it just fine. However, when it starts after the menu screen and I choose 'play'..it just hangs there with a picture of dude..nothing happens. Now, I'm not the sharpest shovel in the shed, I think it may be that my video card isn't up to par.
I read on a forum that it will load on a machine that doesn't meet minimum requirements (in case you upgrade later)
This is my system:
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Hard Drive: 0 MB Space Available, 481 MB Space On Drive
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
Monitor: hp f1703 Flat Panel Monitor
Display Info: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (75Hz)
Pointing Device: Mouse
Sound Card: C-Media Wave Device
Is it that my card is only 8 MBs? is that what AGP8X is? if so, then should I get the card they have in the electronics market for 35,000 won? it's a 64MB GeForce 440.. PX has a Radeon 9200 for $95.. Thought I saw one in the market for like 80,000 won..
Any Ideas? I got this for my boy, he's gonna be 12 on 11 SEP...(of course I want to play it too! )
Thanks |

Your card is a 64MB card, not 8. AGP 8x is the speed of the AGP bus, or the data rate of transfer between the graphics card and the system.
Your card is well....a touch sub-par for the DooM3 course, but it should run it well enough.
Your hard drive has NO space on it? Hmmm....
The machine should run the game fine. There are a pile of things that could be causing a lockup. Do you have the latest drivers? This is paramount to doom3. Go to www.nvidia.com and update the drivers for the graphics. Also, check what kind of mainboard you have and get the latest Intel (.inf update utility), nVidia (forceware) or VIA (4-in-1) drivers. You will need to know the make and chipset for the mainboard. Do you know this already? Did you build or buy? If you built it, these numbers will be on the mainboard box, if you bought it, look uo the specs for that system. Next is DX9b. Do you have it installed. You need it. Sound card drivers are next.
The GeForce4 is a fine card, but seriously overwhelmed by that CPU. I realize graphics are not cheap, but an ATI 9800 pro 128MB is a steal these days and will be a good match for your system. Even a 9700 will wipe the floor with the GF4 MX. 9200 won't do much.....a bit of a waste. Trading a LADA for a YUGO.
Try this driver stuff and post back, ok? Remeber to uninstall the old nVidia graphics drivers first (should be an option in the "add/remove programs) and run a program call "detonator destroyer" http://www.guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/ to clean all of the old files out for good. Reboot to run this, cancel all windows calls for a new driver, possibly reboot again, then run the .exe from the new driver download. Very important to get rid of all the old driver files.
This procedure is not the same for chipset or sound drivers. They can just be installed right away.
Post back and let us know how you are doing.
BTW...you child is 12 and you are letting him play Doom 3? Well, it's a darn scary game. |

Well, I did the nVidia update or so I think...I did that as I read through some of the fixes previously...but not sure what will happen if I go and remove the program..I bought the system as is from HP...I'll have to do some checking about the motherboard. Hell, it's only about a year old...or so...Direct X 9 is what updated when I installed the game...
Too bad there isn't a way to remotely do a diagnostic or 'see' my computer from another terminal..and make the required adjustments...I'm at a loss here.
Actually, the boy was raised on wolfenstein and Doom...he's yet to play Doom III, he's more of a medal of honor and flight simulator dude..
I appreciate the advice on the card and all...good call, I'll have to price a 9800...I think it's less than $200...not sure what the yongsan electronics market has them for....
I have like a 160gb hard drive, and 74 gbs left..strange it says I got zero..
oh, another thing...what's 'winnoun.exe' I get that error when it shuts down along with something about rundll too...I think my Java is hosed too...'java virtual machine launcher' it won't launch I guess...
Yeah, I got a bag of hammers here...
anyone willing to do some remote assistance here? for a 12 pack? case of beer?...it may be worth the challenge....shoot me a PM..
Thanks again...
(I must be one of those 'dumb GI's'..with no future...God I feel so worthless... ) |
