I have an issue with male students not respecting me. They refuse to work, and when I talk to them about it, they barely acknowledge me....I asked my male coteacher for advice since I am new to the school. He said make them speak....what else can I do?

A lot depends on how old these students are, business men- one set of issues, kids- different ones.

I teach middle school boys and while my first and second graders are in general really good, my 3rd graders are starting to get the attuide.

First up you've got to act like you're the boss. Don't back down. Ever. Think about your body language and the signals that might be giving. You need a loud clear voice and don't be afraid of being mean. For some reason these type of students are more likely to respond if you are as mean as a snake. I rarely smile in my 3rd year classes for that reason.

Second one of the best weapons in my aresenal are the childlike punishments. If they fall asleep in my class I walk around and draw hearts on their faces and necks with marker pens (it washes off but they really hate it). If they are talking they have to stand up and do that goofy love heart thing that the little kids do. They really hate that. Saved for students who are really bad is that they have to do it in the staff room during break time. If their homeroom teacher sees them than they are going to get into trouble.

Also whole class punishments are great. If they are talking too much I start adding minutes to the end of class. It soons shuts them up. And of course the ultimate weapon coming back after school and having class.

In the end it really is about finding out what they hate doing and then from there using that as a pressure point. Plus being firm and consistent in your application of rules.
