Just wondering what people do to "escape" from Korea...

I knew a guy that had been living in Korea for over 5 years and he just hated it. Needed the money...but hated it. He used to just stay in and watch tv...didn't like to venture out.

I usually find things like writing, drawing...any creative outlet tends to block out the humdrum that Korea can be(especially after being here for so long). I've also found the meditation works wonders here.

I have a hobby that is free ( now that I've paid for the gear ) and keeps me in on weeknights, so that's less money spent, and very satisfying. Still gotta get out on the weekends though, just to blow off some steam ... but yeah, during the week I'm pretty reclusive, in my own little world ...

I read a novel or two per week. I do most of my reading before bedtime. Before our kid was born, I'd also hit the gym 3 to 5 times a week ( I'll be getting back into that routine soon now that the weather is finally cooling down. I've lost nearly 25 pounds from the lack of exercise). I don't do this to 'escape' from Korea, but rather to be alone with my thoughts...something that is hard to do when you have a kid.

Actually, it's called Incheon International Airport.

I don't want to escape. I like it here. I like my kids, I like my female Korean friends, I like my apartment, I like my coworkers, I like the subway, I like the food, I like the cost of living, I like the department stores, I like the movies. I'll suffer the beer and the cheese.

My motto is "the day I no longer find a student who shows up wearing his/her TKD or boy scout/girl scout uniform endearingly cute, the day I no longer melt when little boys and little girls singing out 'hello' to me in the streets is the day I go back to working in the software world".

What about your male Korean friends?

No, male Korean friends. Why?

Why do you need an escape???

You make it sound like a prison.
So many things to do here.

A good suggestion is to get on a bus and just go to some random place out in the sticks (where I live Very Happy ) and just have a bit of an adventure.

They seem busy with work. The women make time for me.

Why would I escape? My life is perfect here.. good money, good apartment, more holidays than I know what to do with, and lots of friends and recreational activities to keep me busy.

Just because, offers some good advice and it can be fun. Find a bus and ride it to the end of the line and then go exploring. You can find many gems amongst the rubble. You get to meet some interesting people too. Be a little adventurous. Smile

Do you wonder why there's such a difference in experience? For every ESL teacher like us who seems utterly happy and can route around the bumps, you've got an RR who believes he's in hell and can't escape.

I think everyone needs things to do to escape from the stresses of daily life, here in Korea or anywhere else. And most jobs get to be routine in time. No matter where a person is, it is easy to fall into a rut.

One thing other people haven't mentioned so far is staying overnight in a temple up in the mountains. That is something different to 'write home about'.

This summer I took up gardening for the first time in my life. That has been a nice diversion. And it heightened my interest in the weather forecast.

There are all sorts of classes to take and it's a good way to meet new people from a different segment of the population. That can help reduce the feeling of isolation many suffer from.

Wow, Ya-ta boy, staying overnight at a temple in the mountains. That would do it. Excellent.
Real Reality. 'There is no escape'. You're giving me the creeps, man. Laughing You sound like Arnold S. in 'The Terminator' talking about the robots. 'There is no escape', that's hilarious.
For me it's getting my mind on creative projects. The kind of things you look at and say, 'wow, that's cool, whoever did that put a whole lot of work into crafting that'. I can show people, give it away, and they have something made by me, that I created, and giving it is sharing something. Being able to create 'creations' means everything is all right.
