|
|
When I was out in Gang-Won province, there was a weight room at the local public sports ground/stadium, and you could use the weight room for free!
Is there anything remotely close to that type of thing in Seoul? I'm so damn broke and there's no way I can go to a 50k+ won a month health club, but I need to get my doughy butt in shape. Any ideas? |

Work out at home and go jogging, you can use chairs, bags of sugar, anything to weight train and it doesnt matter where you run as long as you're running......................
......On the other hand this has never worked for me cos I see home as a place to chill, my gym in Macheon in Seoul is only 30K a month and has free weights, machines, cardio (bikes, treadmills etc) and a squash court slap bang in the middle for some reason, i think thats pretty reasonable plus the usual free water/towels/wash your t and shorts etc..........................i sound like an ad, if you livre anywhere near this end of the purple line pm me and i'll tell you where it is......................... |

Actually sounds more like Hell-seh (I don't know how to romanise the sound -- anyone?)
I pay 85,000 a month but I just found out that I can buy tickets, and then it costs 5,500 a visit instead. Pricey, very pricey... If you find some place cheap please let us all know!

how come you're amazed at 30,000 a month, but when I tell you about one a third of the price you take the mess out of my pronounciation? |

50,000? Dude, I'm paying 120,000/month...sure my gym is nice, but its not THAT nice.
Decent gyms are expensive over here-its all about space. The more space your gym uses, the less cigarette butts on the floor, the less ridiculously small the free weights-the more it costs.
Actually, my gym is really nice, now that I think of it...and the dumbells go up to 35 kilos, which will do me for however long I am here. Includes a Sauna and Bathhouse. Still, if you told me I was going to pay that much back home, I'd be fing shocked and outraged. |

Swiss James, my bad. I didn't notice your last sentence -- guess I thought it was a signature. Here I go...
What??? 10,000won a month!!!!!!!??????? How is this possible?????
Seriously though, does your gym suck or what? How can everyone else be paying so much more? I want a gym for 10,000 won a month....
BTW sorry if I seemed snippy by correcting your pronounciation of コ. I wasn't trying to be a jerk, just trying to promote accuracy |

I used to go to one in Bundang near Yatap stn. that was W60,000 per month but three months paid in advance was only W120,000.
I also used to go to a "Rocky" gym in Kangseo-gu near Hwagok Stn. that was only W20,000 per month, less if you paid for several months in advance. It was between Hwagok Stn. and Grand Mart/Hotel Nostalgia on the main road.
I think my friends in Haebangcheon go to the Samwon Gym and pay, maybe. W80,000.
My old uni out in Chungcheon-nam do had a great gym that was W60,000 per month, but drop in was only W3,000 so I just did that. I would recommend that if you only want to go a couple times a week.
Now I just go hiking a lot. Well, a little.
Where are you in Seoul? That would help people a lot. |

while we are on the subject, does anyone know of a really good gym with machines (wayguk size) and a decent range of freeweights (ie dumbells above 15kgs)? I'm looking at west-central Seoul, somewhere in the Hong-ik area. Also, where is the best place to buy supplaments like creatine and protein powders (sugar free)?
Cheers

Namdaemun for powders. Black market area downstairs. California Fitness is all the rage these days. It's in Myeong-dong, I think. |

Thanks for lots of replies everyone.
Yeah I've been trying to do a little bit of exercise at home, like pushups, situps, shadowboxing, etc, but I feel I need something more, like machines & freeweights. Thanks for the ad, rNS, but Macheon is kinda far, eh.
Swiss James: 10,000?! Where?! Directions! That's definitely in my range. Even 30k a month is stretching it for me, I'm really on a tight budget.
I don't even care if the place is crappy, I don't need a nice clean fancy place, I just need the basics.
Pyongshin Sangja: That "Rocky" place at Hwagok for 20k sounds okay too, maybe I'll see if I can find that, but that's not super close either. Actually just this last weekend I went hiking, that was good exercise. So I do wanna try doing that a lot more. I live near Seoul University, there's Gwan-ak mountain close by, so I can go hiking there.
Thanks for the help, everyone! |

That sounds a lot like the place I used to go to- same location, this one was opposite the KFC on that street, third or fourth floor up. It was definitely 10,000 too, not the plushest place, (I had my shoes stolen once) but it had all the equipment I needed.
When you went hiking did you find loads of exercise equipment dotted around the place? I always come across that stuff.

There's a new gym just opened right next door to the Seokyo hotel on the same stree as the Hong-Ik station (get out at exit 6, it's between Pizza Hut and the hotel on the main street). Haven't checked it out yet, but you'd imagine it'd be pretty well equipped since it's only been open about 4 months.
Around the same side of town there's an import market on the opposite side of the street as the Hyundai department store at Sinchon. They've got all the tough guy stuff in there: creatine, protein, mouthwash- it's kind of just underground so a little bit bit hard to find- I think it's to the right of the Puma shop and a bank. |

most of the smaller gyms in the non-ritzy neighborhoods run 45-50k/month if you sign up for 3 months at a time. as somebody said just look for the korean sign. I found 4 in my neighborhood |
