Been here in K for 7 years, and my experiences have run the range:
first up, Chang-won Community Center. 40k/month; cheaper by 3-6mo. or 1 yr. membership. Older facility, but decent equipment, use of pool & bathhouse.
Chang-won private 'health' club - nice place; weight room looked right onto aerobics & vice-versa . No bathhouse. 50k/month (but a lot closer to my pad)
San-bon/Goon-po: Green Hills Sports Club. 90k/month. That got you gym, squash & bathhouse. I probably could have gone anywhere & done anything I wanted there. Full range of facilities - golf, sports massage, restaurants, etc. Worked out there with a former Miss Korea, who was an absolute no-Engrish smoker of a lady, in every sense.
Currently: Ui-wang Community Center. 30k/month, but I had to FIGHT to be allowed in, and I am the ONLY westerner they have ever had, and probably would ever accept (that is all detailed in another thread somewhere). Nice place; 2 blocks away, good equip (my dumbbells only go up to 30 kg, but I am pretty sure I am the only guy to ever touch them). They will not let me use the bathhouse (for swimming & aerobics only - and really seem to enforce that!), but equipment is new & in good shape, and I can't beat the location or price.
Short version: find your local community-supported center, and see if they will take you. You would have to have your ARC to even think about it, but it may be your best option - they also almost always provide free shuttle buses, as well.
Regards,
G.
PS ~ for 90% protein powder, try Costco. They only stock chocolate (as of now), but I'm trying to get in vanilla, just because it is more versatile for shakes. if any of you readers ever shop Costco, please put in a written request on the little card as well - I'd appreciate it. |

Are all the health clubs i see likely to have free weights or will they just be the usual middle aged women targetted gyms, with nothing more than cardio stuff? Are korean gyms like western gyms in that theyre always pushing for a big sale and trying to get you to sign up for eternity? My korean is really basic and im a bit worried about talkin contracts and stuff.
Im here in shinchon and looking for a decent gym...I was thinking about the yonsei uni gym but all the female students might put a dent in my concentration.. |

Actually sounds more like Hell-seh (I don't know how to romanise the sound -- anyone?)
I pay 85,000 a month but I just found out that I can buy tickets, and then it costs 5,500 a visit instead. Pricey, very pricey... If you find some place cheap please let us all know! |
WOW!!!!
The prices you guys are paying! Are you in Seoul? GAG!
When I lived in Gangbyeon on the East side, there were a few mom & pop places for 30 or 40,000 a month. My place is 20,000 won, but it's in my building (not as common). Not many free weights here, but tons of treadmills and a stairstepper or two. Some Parabody-type machines and dumbells of all sizes.
Where are you guys at? |
