Having worked in the banking industry doing the exact work we are talking about here, I'm thinking it's a work of fiction because it doesn't make sense that they would require six days to do such an upgrade. And certainly no one would plan it around a time when everyone would be spending more and having to pay triple time on wages to get the job done and bringing in all sorts of managers to make sure it works. One upgrade project I was on had to be done before December 19 to ensure that everyone could get their money in the week leading up to and including Christmas (and of course, the days after).

I would wager it's a solvency issue. Up to and including Chusok, everyone goes on a spending binge. That means lots of people are taking money out and no one is putting money in. Given how Woori has overextended on the credit card business this year, had the floodgates remained I would wager they would have run out of cash. And it's far nicer to say "we're not letting you have your money because we are doing bank upgrades" than to say "we're not letting you have your money because we don't have it to give you."

At least that's my opinion.

Does anyone know of a spot in Daegu where I can either get a cash advance on my Canadian Mastercard or access my Canadian Bank with my Canadian ATM card?

Unbelievable!

I had to dip into my canuck account...PF look for HANNET machines...usually at subway and LG25s in Seoul...I can access my acc from those...they have both cirrus and plus options....good luck to all the other happy 'worry' bank customers...

Makes sense. Why would it take six days? Something stinks.

I was in daegu yesterday and saw international ATMs at the subway station. Should all else fail, go to the DongDaegu Train terminal. I have used one there in the past few weeks.

nothing like having a bank not allowing a person to withdraw their OWN money. isn't woori one of the biggest banks here in korea too?

i asked the LG 25 lady about why i can't access money etc (the woori ATM is inside LG 25) and she gave the reason and asked if i had a different bank account that i could withdraw from (i don't). she was suprised to find out that i didn't. do a lot of people here in korea have more than one bank??

Hmm..Thanks for the leads...i went to the subway station and tried the NICE cashing machine, which had Mastercard, Cirrus, Interac signs on it, but I couldn't get either my Bank card or MC to work....

On Thursday I'm going to Woori and closing my account...taking my 25 million won with me.....

They fell from Korea's 2nd largest to 3rd largest banking "concern" (it's a weird "financial holding company/group" structure) over the past year or two.

Yeah, Koreans will typically have several personal bank accounts. The reasons why are logical:

Say you open your first account at Bank A, because they have a branch on the ground floor of the building where you work.

Later, you buy a house or just take out a big loan, and Bank B gives you the best terms. Bank B will most certainly require you to open an account with them if they lend you money. So now you've got two accounts.

Then let's say you move, and the only bank with a branch in your new neighbourhood is Bank C, so you open an account there. That makes three.

Then your younger brother gets hired by Bank D, which often results in every member of the family dutifully running down to Bank D and opening accounts there.

Korean husbands (and probably wives, too) will often set up secret accounts at Bank E that their spouses don't know about.

This is how people end up with half a dozen bank accounts, and it's why about 50% of all existing accounts in Korea have, like, 10,000 won if that in them. People forget they have them, or just can't be bothered go down and close them.

I consciously avoided opening a second personal account for a long time. Just didn't need one, or the hassle of another passbook, another piece of plastic to carry around, another PW to memorise, etc. When you run a business, though, multiple accounts at all the major banks is almost de rigeur, as some clients will only pay to accounts of their main bank.

There may be more to it as Gord suggests but just the fact that they close the ATM's over the same period that the branches themselves are closed is just insane.

It reminds me of the 1 hour I spent walking around Omokyo (immigration office area) at lunchtime looking for an open restaurant. They close the restaurants at lunchtime????!!!!! Confused

When people start telling stories about weird things in Korea, I like to tell about the garbage can in the park next to Technomart. Two years ago, it was filled often, because it was the only garbage can near TM if you left from the West side. Soon, it became overflowingly full and was a mess. They didn't empty if often enough.

Rather than empty it more often, someone's solution was just to remove the garbage can entirely.

There -- no more problem.

Now there's just garbage floating around all over in that area.

As if garbage weren't enough of a problem in Seoul, the garbage cans were removed from the subways in most areas. The excuse was that it might hamper a terrorist attack. In truth, I think they just wanted to avoid having to collect garbage.
