Maybe jobs like mine are not the easiest to get but I'm pulling a Leonardo Di Caprio on the bow of Titanic on the happiness scale and I think everybody should try to get a gig like this.

Look what happened to Di Caprio in that film! Power to ya, Beaver, but your continual bragging about your job is not edifying. My point stands -- the gold ring you were fortunate to grasp is a rare thing & you dangle it here as if anyone who settles for less is a loser. This isnt sour grapes on my part. I'm happy youre happy. Maybe you think youre inspiring some to higher achievement but more likely your pose inspires others to feel discontent with otherwise reasonable jobs.

Sorry for breeding discontent but it's not just me. All of my longterm friends, with one exception, have similar positions.

Don't know if he is bragging or not, but theses jobs are out there.

I only had a BA (although I should have my MA by the end of this semester) and one and a half years experience when I signed up at my college (5 months paid vacation, 15 hours teaching a week, full credit courses, etc).

The problem with these sort of jobs is that they are only available twice a year. Plus they usually start advetising and interviewing for them several months in advance of the actual start date.

Jobs like that may be available, but they sure aren't being advirtised on this or other Korean internet job boards that often. Glancing through the Korean jobs offered on this website in particlar, it seems around 8 weeks is standard for the vast majority of university jobs and that sort of vacation time is becoming the norm. So how did you find out about YOUR job, through connections?. It seems to me that jobs like yours are not only uncommon but also difficult to get becasue of low-turnover (esp with only a BA). Also not everybody has conections readily available either (for example, living in a different part of Korea, no time to visit many universities in person, etc).

Also how much job security is there for any university job in Korea when your title is only "visiting foreign instructor" and you're only signing a yearly contract? The becomes more of an issue the older you get, imo.

Lots of mediocre universities and I'm not denying it. But still -- 8 weeks of vacation for a bad university versus 2 weeks on the outside for a good hagwon. The smaller holidays are usually for on-campus hagwons (which can still be pretty good).

Yes, I did find out about my job through connections but connections aren't all that difficult to get. Just meet people in bars and KOTESOL meetings and other social activities.

Putting in a year or two at a mediocre university makes you more marketable for other universities and gets you more contacts and (more often than not) is still better than a hagwon.

Living in a different part of Korea does make it difficult to get in the cycle -- no advice there, sorry, but I do know people who went way out of their way to come up to Seoul for interviews.

Job security is an issue with some places (not mine, fortunately) and they give a cut off at 5 years. But once you're in the game it isn't all that difficult to move to a different university and 5 years at the same place is a pretty good haul.

Well, my college advertises in the Korea Herald and Korea Times when they looking. I didn't have anu contacts here when I applied.

The university/college hiring period is bery specific - before the semesters begin. Last year I interviewed for a number of university positions. All of the interviews were in November/December for jobs begining March of this year.

I decided that I had had enough of the hagwon life (actually I was more tired of the working for a small business side of it rather than the actual teaching) and dedicated myself over several months to getting a position at a college or uni. Ended up turning down several offers from decent hogwans along the way.

Oh job security - two of the English teachers at my school ore over 50. Some of the Japanese teachers are pushing 60.

One of my coworkers has been there 7 years.

However I am not looking to stay there forever (I'm 25).

One of the good things about working at a college is the time that becomes available for you to pursue other activities. Several of my coworkers also work part time at various hogwans, one of them owns and runs a recruiting company and I am attending a Korean graduate school (almost finished!!).

I finishing my 3rd year right now... have a M.A, but still felt lucky to get a university job in my second year, even if it was out of the way. It's been a good ride... meaning about 5 and a half months of vacation a year, but I've always seen the position as a means of getting a position in Seoul. And so I'll be one of those guys looking for one of those positions.Wink

2 years? You're still a newbie.

Aw, come on! Shouldn't 2 years at least get you elevated to something like "Field Marshall Newbie" status? "Lance Corporal Neophyte", or "Commandant Cherry", or something like that? Wink
