|
|
OK, I know there was a thread about this before, but I did a search and came up short, so here goes:
angelfire.com is blocked in Korea for some rediculous reason. I know there are websites you can use to get around this, but I don't know what they are or what they're called.
Any suggestions? I'd like to add pics to my webpage for the folks back home, but I can't get to it! |

I'll do the FAQ on viewing blocked sites using a proxy server: A proxy server acts as a relay for you internet browser. It means your browser appears to just be looking at the proxy site when in fact it is asking the proxy about other external sites. This bypasses blacklist blocks like those used by the Korean government on sites such as Livejournal and lycos.
To set up a proxy server you first need to pick a server. There are many availiable and the free ones frequently go offline so you may have to change it if it stops working (you won't be able to load any new sites or the internet will slow way down). To find a proxy server google search for free proxy lists, ignore the first result as it randomly links to a porn site (quite good porn but porn non the less). Then follow the below instructions for your browser.
1) (all browsers) Get a proxy address, these come in two parts the IP (eg. 200.62.146.126) and the port number (eg. 80). *These settings work at the minute (26-10-2004)*
2) (Internet explorer) Go to Tools-> Internet Options-> Connections (Tab) -> Settings. Then in the box about Proxy server enter the IP adress in the address box and the port number in the Port box.
2) (firefox) Go to Tools-> Options-> Connection settings-> put a spot in the manual proxy configuration box, then fill in the address and port numer in the line marked HTTP: Proxy.
3) (all browsers) Surf away free from those evil site blocks
Bear in mind it is generally slower to access a site using a proxy than a direct conection so I usually switch back and forth between a proxy and a direct connection depending on what I am viewing.
MODS: please edit this for layout and writing style and move it where you see fit............ |

Isn't angelfire owned by Lycos which was recently purchased by a Korean portal? Hrm... I'm surprised they're still blocking it. |

I could have but this was intended as the last word in how to view any blocked in Korea site, seems like this is a problem a lot of people have so I wrote up step by step instructions which I shall link to whenever the issue come up again. As a fringe benefit proxy servers stop your network administrator knowing that you are looking at animal porn at work (though most admin guys will see you looking at a proxy and assume the worst). |
