Ever do this? Went to Carrefour the other day and bought what I thought were some nice doughy breadsticks. Turned out they were all filled with whip cream. Not a good match with my spaghetti. Then the other day I bought what looked like some nice small loaves of corn bread. I was going to melt some cheese on these. I opened them up and, yep, these too were filled with some sweet cream goop.
And then there was the time I first bought some grocery store hotduk thinking they were Korean English muffins. Imagine my surprise when I cut one open like an English muffin to discover��

If it's one thing koreans can do really well is screw up something so simple! Especially when it comes to food! I've done the same thing you have thinking I'm going to have a great meal only to find out....
Why they put that nasty tasting what they consider cream in pastries is beyond reasoning! I suppose they don't know different and are used to eating it from birth on. |

Anything from the bakeries, Homeplus are another one for hiding little surprises in what looks to be a tasty snack. I go to the local Paris Baggette now.  |

Just last weekend I bought what I thought was a prewrapped peanut butter sandwich. No jelly advertized, but that's ok, I like PB. Opened it up and took a bite of a stale bread and peanut flavored whipped cream sandwich...
At least I can get a decent bagel with cream cheese and chocolate chip bread twist in Seoul every morning. They do those right! |

I've always assumed Koreans didn't have a taste for sweet things but then when they pump otherwise good bread products full of sweet goop, I have my doubts.
I still have to laugh at their version of sour cream. It appears to be a mixture of whipped butter and cream cheese.
My latest line is "You know you've been in Korea too long when a taco bar at a Korean Sizzler tastes good to you."
"Wow look at all the juicy canned corn they put in that ground beef! Mmm mmm! And this salsa hardly tastes like ketchup! They might have used a mayo base. Mmmm mmmm!" |

I recall now another stupid thing I did. I bought persimmons thinking they were some exotic asian tomato. They sure do look like tomatoes:

Like kumquats, I was aware of persimmons as a theoretical construct but being from Canada I never really encountered that fruit. Now I know. Luckily when I sliced one open it sure didn't smell tomatoey and I didn't try to make tomato sauce from them. Ho boy. |

If only I could say the same. About 7 years ago to the day I made that horrible thing. Maybe if I didn't have a cold I could have smelled it.

That happens to some teacher every fall at my school.
I suppose I could be nice and warn all the new people, but really, it's more fun to wait and see who's going to make the mistake this year.  |

Me and my roomate were going to do up some hard core hotdogs. So we were going to put two weiners into one huge bun, shaped like a footlong hot dog bun/mini baguette.
We slice open the bun, and find some sort of sweet red bean paste. My buddy opted for white bread, but i soldiered on. I dug that red shizzle out and goddamned if i didn't use it for my hot dog. I still remember the taste of mustard and cheeze whiz mixing with the red bean remnaints.  |

Ohhh soooo many times. The cream filled bread one STILL catches me sometimes when I think "no way does THIS one have anything in it." BZZZTTT. Wrong.
First week here I bought a wonderful looking sugary-coated "jelly" doughnut. Mmmm hhmm. Red bean paste. Ick. |
