I had little money and lost my phone throughout the holiday, so I stayed home and watched TV and ate noodles for 3 days. Absolutely boring, and I wallowed in self pity, a lack of creativity, and general hatred of Korea even though I put myself in my own situation. When I emerged from my little hole, I was approached by a foreigner who was welcomed by a bug-eyed freakiest waygook contest response.

I got pissed for 6 days straight, almost died in a scooter accident and peeled several friends off the pavement. What a deal.

My neighbor was incapacitated so I spent a lot of time cooking for both of us. In between meals, I discovered that Mark Twain's Roughing It is not about kinky sex, but was still pretty entertaining. And watched the 3 DVD set of Kurasawa movies I bought as my Chusok present.

All in all, a good time was had by all, except my neighbor who felt lousy but ate well.

1. got trashed hard style for like 2 straight days in Suyu
2. ate some killer homemade barbecue ribs in Suyu
3. Bobster's birthday which involved quite a few shots of Jager
4. went to some Chagell art gallery thingie
5. hung out with the Chica a lot

Considering how little I had planned until the weekend of Chuseok, it was pretty sweet.

Hmmmm, I spent a lot of time in traffic, slept in a room with a 96 year old woman, wore a hanbok, bowed to a memorial table, took a short hike in a hanbok and watched a bunch of men bow, fished in a river, played with little kids, peeled chestnuts, sorted bean sprouts, dished out rice, and ate A LOT of food, then spent a lot more time in traffic. Fortunately, all this was in Jirisan, and the weather was brilliant.

I don't know what to tell you -- I myself saw no sign posted, did not receive a text message via cell-phone, and even went to the bank on friday morning to pay bills and was not informed of this. I knows i wasn't the only one. Maybe some branch managers didn't get off their asses in time, as even some koreans i talked to (in my tiny village of about 10,000 ) were punk'd.

Peppergirl, my husband's family is the same as yours, EXCEPT if you're a new "recruit" and we just got married last month. I think that they were saying, "Here ancestors, meet the latest family member."

Actually, I think it's kind of sad that just the men do it -- not that I want to bow as it isn't part of my culture, but I wish that any daughters we have could. Also, one cousin is actually just the son of one aunt (either a divorce or a death was involved, but my husband doesn't know which) so he doesn't bow either. I felt kind of weird about that...

, Vanislander. I know what you mean about wanting to drive up the East coast. The Summer vacation two years ago I took the motorbike from Ulsan up to some place around Taebaek (but on the coast). It's really nice. Somewhere between those two places there's a fossil museum. Pay a few thousand to enter. It's right on the coast highway, can't miss it. It has a larger display of fossils alone than the complete mineral/crystal/fossil collection of the geology dept. of the Uni I went to. Two floors, whole building to itself. On the open rooftop are a collection of petrified logs.
Takes a long time for a back strain to settle out Smile

. Last Christmas I did a woah daddy on mine and was getting around like an ancient 'spiderman', clinging to walls like I loved them just to get between the W.C. and bed. This was 2 weeks of 'love walling' Smile

With Fridays off Very Happy

I left that Thursday night and did three days of hiking in Sorak--I really recommend the Kong-nong-neung-sun trail, pm me for details. Back to Seoul against the traffic grain on Monday night for a laid back dinner with the in-laws on Tuesday. Worked Thursday and headed off to Chiaksan on Thursday night. Rain on Friday, excellent cold and clear skies this morning. Just made it back and am currently prepping for classes I've hardly seen in two weeks or so.
