I am currently reading Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution and trying to comply with his instructions.
Needless to say, I have to overcome the hurdles of reading the package names and finding something I like.
My belt is fitting looser already, but the diet has wrought havoc with my digestive system. That is probably because I swore off white rice and can't find anything to take its place. I understand that there is a Website through which one could order oatmeal in Korea, but I can't find it.
The local supermarket has a good line of products under the brand name of 츮 깰 (our agricultural products). When I get home, I am going to try boiling their (yellow glutinous millet) and their (brown unhulled rice).
I still wish I could find an alternative to white bread. Where can I get wheat bread or rye bread? And what would the name on the package say?

anybody know how many heart attacks dr. atkins had before he finally kicked the bucket last winter (from, of course, a heart attack)? was it two or three?
it works for losing weight, but it is absolutely awful for you. your body produces ketones when you don't eat carbs and it's really bad for your kidneys. they have these little strips that you can buy to test whether your body is in ketosis or not (these strips are for people who are diabetic to tell if they're going into shock or something).
it doesn't seem natural. it doesn't seem healthy. people should just get out and exercise, do a better job at portion control, etc.
but i s'pose if you're gonna do it, korea would be the place. you can get a lot of different meats here. reading labels to actually monitor your carb intake must be a birch, though. |

....actually I think Atkins died of complications due to a bad spill he took outside of his condo in NY...his physician released a statement to refute the rumour mills stating that his blood pressure and cholesterol had been textbook and his heart condition was viral and not diet related...
I've had my own stats checked regularly and I'm in great health (minus current head cold that is...)
..however I do believe that no diet should exclude exercise, and I (as Atkins also advocates) exercise regularly... |

Oatmeal in Itaewon!
Go down the street between geckos and burger king.... you can go to the redoor shop on the left for black market goods.
or
keep going down that street till you hit Chungwa apartments on the right.... there is a freshmarket in there and downstairs before you enter the supermarket is a man in a corner selling black market goods too. |

Paris Bagette and Crown Bakery both sell whole wheat bread.
As a rule of thumb for veggies, try to eat veggies high in fibre. Light coloured veggies like potatoes or radishes are very high in sugar so avoid them.
Do a search on the internet for "glycemic index". You should generally be trying to eat food that is below a score of 73. BTW, dry packaged pasta still lingers between 61-66 on the index so, it can easily replace rice which is between 83-96, depending on if you get brown or white rice. You should also know that whole wheat bread has a score of 99. For energy, make sure you take you B vitamins, especially B12.
If you really want to optimise your diet/metabolism, do a search on "blood type dietary guidlines". |

Here's an idea...lay off the western diet...cut bread and sugar and eat a traditional Korean diet and the weight will fall off.
I eat like crazy everyday and I am losing weight like mad.
I was always a "normal" weight. Then when I was working in the computer industry working 15 hour days I ballooned up to 210 lbs. (I'm 5' 7" and normally 140 lbs) It lasted for a couple of years then I decided I needed to do something about it. I cut out sugar (4 litres of Pepsi a day) and started eating "normal" meals. I lost 30 lbs in 5 weeks. The rest of the weight didn't seem to want to come off.
Like I said, the rest of the weight has been falling off...
Just a thought. |

That is an obscene amount of Pepsi, but good on you man...
Atkins is good for losing a lot of weight initially, I can't argue with that, but like everything else your body will start to adapt. There is no way that you can ever consistently trick your body for any length of time. And no matter what, it can't be good for you, cutting out a food group and replacing it with fat cannot be good for you, and is also a bitch if you want to retain muscle while losing weight. The ideal solution is to do Atkins until you've lost most of the weight you want to lose then switch to a sensible low fat diet with regular exercise (well the sensible thing is to do that from the kickoff but we dont live in a perfect world).

Yeah he died of slipping on some ice and an ensuing blood clot, fair enough, but he did have a few heart attacks before he died and he wasnt that old. When you say his physician released the statement you are talking about a man who had been good friends with the family for twenty years, is it not possible that this guy wanted to make sure that the Atkins empire was still going for the family left behind. Its not exactly a giant lie is it (and it was never verified despite repeated requaests by anti-Atkins types)............I smell a conspiracy............... |

I saw и and Ҹ in the grain section at the supermarket, and I had to look up both words in the ѻ.
и is "ۺ," which means "pressed (rolled) barley."
Ҹ is " η ̵ ó ٵ ." As well as I can figure, that means "barley grain which has been lined up and then trimmed, hulled, and refined like rice."
Since Dr. Atkins disapproves of refined rice, he would most likely disapprove of Ҹ. What do you suppose he would say about и? |

Dr. Peter Gott has had a lot of success stories with his "no flour, no sugar" diet. He does allow for natural sugar products like fruit and stuff.
I myself have cut down on carbs, though I still eat sandwiches. I have cut out pancakes, doughnuts and other stuff like that. And with rice, I limit myself to a single bowl. |

It's a luxury, granted, but because I'm going to be here for some time I broke down and bought a bread machine at Carrefour for about 70,000 won. I buy Pillsbury whole wheat flour from Dandy's, the little grocery store right in front of Hanam Supermarket in Hanganjing. I make an almost all whole grain bread, adding some soy flour I found at a local healthfood shop (just a little, has a strong flavor), oatmeal, cornmeal, some walnuts, and when I have them, pumpkin seeds. Sometimes I use milk, sometimes whey (it's a cinch to make your own cottage cheese or ricotta, another nice treat for Atkins dieters, then just add some cocoa powder and a packet of Splenda, maybe some walnuts...)
If anyone needs specifics re: the recipes, let me know. For the ricotta, all you need is milk and lemon juice.
Also good for Atkins: Did you ever try those seafood sticks that taste like crab? Available at any local supermarket. Get the orange colored ones, not the red ones. Chop and mix with mayo, minced onion, diced celery, salt & pepper. |
