On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest etc etc.
Just seems as though beyond the Korean drinking culture here most waegooks have very little interest in getting to know ANYTHING about K language, music, history, most people even baulk at the food. Even some people who've been here for 4 or 5 years. Why is this....?
For the record I voted 3. |

I said 7.
I like and respect their culture, when it is being followed.
I don't see how pushing, being rude, and spitting is any part of their culture. To me, just bad manners. But they do have some good culture. |

Food, language, faith when it is sincere, handicrafts, traditional clothing, traditional status and realationships, even when it does mean I get stepped all over in the street, archeology.
But every now and then of course I need a good pizza and a movie night. |

I heard a rumor that you're eating a bean filled cake in the shape of a fish even as we speak. |

I null-voted and just viewed the results because I dont know how to answer the question. I guess you could say I am into Koreans and 'Korean Culture' because I can speak Korean pretty well (no problems chatting about almost all subjects, never have to resort to English), but sometimes I am pretty down on Koreans. Its not the 'Koreans are staring at me' syndrome or the 'Koreans are talking about me behind my back' paranoia that some people that cant speak Korean have, but more a sense of disappointment when the words of Korean people never fail to be different from the Korean reality.
Korean people are always talking up Korea and Korean people. 'All Korean girls are virgins before marriage' is one of the absolutely blatant lies Koreans tell and they know it. Only a small minority of Korean girls are virgins when they get married, although they will still claim they are. Then Koreans have the nerve to imply that western girls are sluts because they are supposedly more 'open minded' than Koreans.
Then you have Korean guys warning Korean girls that the foreigner is dangerous. Even a Korean guy that professes friendship will do that. All the Korean girls that I have met that have been raped have been raped by Korean guys, not foreigners. The whole rape thing in Korea is something Koreans will discuss with foreigners only if they are in a very candid mood, or if they have kind of 'forgotten' that you are a foreigner because the conversation is in Korean.
There are a thousand more things that Koreans wont tell you. If you want to learn about the 'real Korea' (which actually has real problems, unlike the fantasyland peddled by Koreans), then its something you have to find out by yourself. Learning Korean is the quickest way. |

I don't know if Real Reality can back me up on this or not, but I recall reading in a paper last year that "hymen replacement" was the most common operation in Korean cosmetic surgery.
Am I remembering correctly, or do I owe Korean women an apology here? |

Never heard this; most of the Koreans I know freely confess that K-girls are just like girls of other races, except perhaps a tad more mercenary and self-centered.

Never heard this either, in fact most Koreans I know love all the foreign guys they meet.

Yeah, if you're a foreigner they just met five minutes ago and you're just looking to cause trouble or discomfit them by asking personal questions to which you have already made up your mind as to what the answers are. Can you blame them? |

The Koreans you know 'freely confess' this? Maybe you have been associating with the English language bandits who vampirically make you an english teacher in your social time. I dont know any Koreans who would describe their own people as 'more mercenary and self-centered'.

Locked inside your English language world in Korea, how would you even know?

Did I ever say I was asking strangers personal questions? Misrepresenting my words and then saying 'can you blame them?' does not address the issue at hand. Why dont you tell me about Koreans since you know so much? |

Oh this guy's going to get schooled the next time Corporal's online.
I don't really know how to answer either, I love Korea and have a great time here, but I take what I want from the culture. I'm not down at the library every night researching its history, literature, arts, music etc- but I enjoy the pop/youth culture, films, and have travelled to a few popular spots around the RoK. |
