| no wonder the korean women swept the ladies' competition in athens..........at my public school the archer girls (like the baseball players and others), go to their 2 classes and spend the rest of the day firing arrows in the little range behind the school..................the range is located next to the dormitory where the 15 of them stay monday through saturday...................because you know, medals in archery certainly put a country at the forefront of the world.............. |

I'm a keen archer/bowhunter, and the whole thing seems so damn exclusive here. It's difficult to even find a range where I'm permitted to have some target practice. What I really, really, really want is to get up into the mountains in Gangwon and catch a pig-on-a-spit dinner. Starting to doubt that's ever going to happen though.
My wife was on the archery team in school. She says she got preferential treatment, and was popular among her peers because of it. |

That's kind of odd but cool... you met her and married, but did you ever try archery together? And you both like it a lot? Or did you meet that way?
By the way, to the OP, I was curious how Korea could put any athletes in anything, given the way schools work here. That's when I was told about certain schools where the athletes go to essentially learn there sport, and study a whole lot less. They don't learn a lot of anything else. |

| Sounds like my school now, and the previous one. The students go to a few classes during which they only want to sleep. The rest of the time, they are practising their sport (some form of Thai ���� and Judo) |

I'm wondering what his point is too. Archery doesn't seem like an A-class sport in the west but I would imagine in the east it's a big deal. I'm sure Koreans wonder about shot-put... At the end of the day, Koreans won a very respectable number of olympic golds. |

That's not how we met, but it did give us a nice common interest to discuss at the get-go. She hasn't competed for a few years, but wants to get back into it. I'm more into bowhunting, but she's never even drawn a hunting bow. I had mine custom made here. She wants to get a compound bow for target archery, but you're talking millions of won for that sort of equipment; and it's very delicate, fragile stuff. Drop it once and it's useless.
I'll get down to Kwangju (I think that's where it is) one day where there's a western guy who operates a traditional Korean hwarang bow place. |
