Whenever I receive a topic reply notification from Dave's, I have difficulty accessing them and (as a result of service pack 2) a recommendation suggesting that I may want to install an "ActiveX control: Macromedia Flash Player 7 from Macromedia Inc. is prompted in the pop-up blocker bar. Is this installation safe?

Macromedia is a pretty well established software company- so it's unlikey that there would be a virus directly attached. I'd say it'd be okay.

It displays animations made with Macromedia Flash. A lot of websites with those animated ads use flash for the animation. It's also used to make a lot of animated web content such as Strongbad Smile .

It's also used for lots of silly little web games (very addictive.)

Enjoy! Installing flash player itself is harmless, sometimes the ads that use it get on my nerves though. Your pop-up blocker is warning you that the website is trying to install the flash player.

Direct from the Flash website FAQ

Quote:
About Macromedia Flash Player
Macromedia Flash Player is free software that lets you view web content created by Macromedia Flash. This content may be interactive content such as menus that slide, or may be complex programs like games and movies. Many web browsers (Internet Explorer, for example) install Macromedia Flash Player automatically, but you may need to upgrade it from time to time as Macromedia makes improvements and as websites you visit update their content.

Thanks guys (and girls, peppermint!). I downloaded it. Every time that I click on a dave's notification I receive a prompt that I have to click yes in order to proceed. Do you folks have this?

MMF & their ShockWave player are mostly harmless; i say mostly, because they can also be used to author popup ads on pages (the animated looking kind that float over other pages).

As huge HSR fans (Rock, Rock On!), we are willing to make the trade off, but some anti-spyware programs will try to disable MMF/SW.

If I am not mistaken, there SHOULD be a way to tell it to 'remember' when you go to a site that it is ok. Maybe you have Ad-aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster installed, as well? (Can't remember which is which right now - waiting for coffee to kick in).

***One more note about MMF - iff you have a webcam, there is an option that allows sites that also use MMF to access your camera remotely. Generally, you have to grant permission to do so. However, if their site or your computer is hacked, well . . . where does your camera look out over??? Embarassed

Regards,

G.

There were security problems with versions 5.0 and 6.0 but since the newest version, 7.0, came out, it has been fairly stable. I am a security freak about my comupter and I have 7.0 installed. Cool
