I would choose Korea because I'm lazy and hangul is easier to read.

i reckon you're right. but korea has this strange pull on you. but i think i'll give japan a go coz i haven't been there.

as you said, demand in korea is so high. korea will always be there if things don't go well in japan i guess.

and at the end of the day, money in korea is easier to come by than japan....

Yeah, go for it. It's not like Korea is going to cave into the ocean over the next three years if things in Japan don't go so hot...there will always be plenty of opportunities here, esp with your qulifications.

and the anonymity thing is big for me too. just being able to get on with life and live life without having to deal with the stares and he comments and the hellos and the remarks and the snickers etc that are so rife in korea.

is japan any different?

peope are always complaining about being stared out in korea. i simply choose not to notice it. it has never bothered me. i was in japan recently and when i got back to korea i did notice the stares, but then i blocked it out again.

like i said - my girl, music, food - in that order

japan don't got it

i think if you're passionate about something anywhere is good really. i'm trying to convince myself that i'm passionate about something in korea but when that something is an unknown i guess you have to look in the mirror

and hojucandy......i asked my mum, who has lived at tweed heads since the 60s, and she said she's never known it as anyhting but the goldy...so you must be methusula...^^

just because you're an aussie aren't you? from the goldy? i'm living and working on the goldy and in brisbane now and so many of the japanese students and surfers i meet are so cool.

much cooler than the koreans who are out here travelling and studying.

the japanese are up for fun and enjoying themselves and having a laugh. and there is a definite surf culture among them here.

did you find much of that outgoing nature in japan when you were there?

Thats me, grew up there for about 12 years(well in tweed heads but close enough) and I'm a youngin at 26 so I still love to go there and have a good time.

Japanese are definantly a lot more approachable in Australia than Koreans I agree with that. I think it is to do with the fact that they have been exposed to the west a lot longer than Koreans so it is much easier for them.

I met my ex-Japanese girlfriend at Surfers(we went out for 2.5 years) because she was in with the surfie crowd(i used to be a bit of a surfie, that dies whern you move here) and we had some good rides together.

However, in japan the youngins are a lot different as most still live at home and the parents have a huge influence over them. People are definantly a lot more chilled out in japan but that still doesn't mean that they don't backstab the crap out of you. Drove me crazy.

I still say you should go.

I like Korean food (galbi) and the lower cost of living.

But Japan for probably everything else.

I love Korea. Been here 7 years! (well, more like 5, with vacations. But based here for 7).

But, I can give one definite plus for Japan: you own your visa. You go, you pay, and you do whatever. Want to teach/ Change jobs? Study? Travel? Language courses? Aikido? Stint of bartending? Keep yourself financially solvent & jake with the law, and it's all good . . .

(I mention this because a lot of people are her for the money, or for the 'Asian experience,' and i think Korea's visa limit sorely restricts both, unless you happen to be a Ozzie here on the 'Working-holiday Visa')

If Korea had a similar system, where employers didn't have you perpetually poised over the barrel, I'd never look back. Very Happy

Hmmm - also, J-attitudes towards the nasty are a hella more relaxed, as well. That could be a little pull in their favor, as well. Twisted Evil

Been to Jappas four times now, got great friends there who are really established. Always have an absolute blast. I think the foreigner scene is more unified and social, and much more relaxed and fun lovin'. There's also a lot of really easy to get yummy's of the head altering kind. The tang is easier to get. And life is generally easier. Korea is hard going in comparison.

Yet, Korea has some kind of grainy gritty pungent pull on me. It doesn't make sense at all, but it's real. I just call it flavour. It's more of a an adventure, more of a chaotic frontier type experience than Japan which is very smooth and established, kind of ordinary, almost like being in the west with lots of asian faces around. I definitely feel I'm getting a much more "asian" experience here.

just thot i'd note here that canadians can also get working holiday visas, albeit for only 6 months compared to the one year available to ozzies.

HJ, thanx for the clarification - to be honest, I would almost suggest that option to any Canuck or Ozzie thinking about an E-2 hakwon job.

(i thought someone else got one, but couldn't remember, and would rather have someone 'add one in' than make a mistake by overextending)

i think you have to be under 30 to get working holiday visa. that's the rule for most WHV between countries in europe and oz/canada etc

the goldy? that's a new one on me! i must be getting old. i've been going to the gold coast since the 60's and i've never heard it called that. we just called it "down the coast". (as opposed to "up the coast")

anyway - mithridates suggested fukuoka.. now that has to be the dullest city in japan... everything is underground!

my girl is in busan, that's why i live here. but even if i was single i would rather live in korea.

like i said - its the music. korea and india have the best in the world.

oh - and iran

...

and morocco...

ah - there is a lot of good music around.
(but not in japan)
Smile

I can't wait to get to Korea and listen the type of music you speak so fondly of. I always hear of k-pop (if i wrote that right) but nothing really good about it. Does what you speak of have guitars (in the Western sense) or the like, and in what capacity? What maeks it so appealing? I'm honestly curious. I haven't heard anyone else speak of its virtues, or aagainst them, on this board.
