Hey I've been here a couple of months now and am starting to go a little loopy from lack of reading material. The bookstores I have been to that have sold English books tend to have mainly mainstream fiction (Mary Higgins Clark, Tom Clancy, etc) and classics (Bronte, Shakespeare, etc) Is there somewhere I can get something a little different or am I gonna be stuck paying shipping costs for the next year? On that note if anyone has any Robert Wilson laying around they'd like to loan a desperate chick, I would love you forever. thanks Smile

Just don't be surprised when your books from "Whatthebook" don't come for over a month, even though the shipping is supposed to be 9 business days. And don't be surprised when you give "Whatthebook" a second chance (just to be fair) and the same thing happens...except this time books have been shipped to Austria and it takes over 6 weeks to get your books.

Other options:

www.yesasia.com (free shipping, extensive list of books, just like Amazon.com, and reliable service)

Bandi and Lundi at Coex Mall in Seoul has a great selection--probably the best in Seoul, and I've been to all the bookstores. If you want to go browsing for books, this would be a good place. If you know what you want to order, go for yesasia.com

Actually, I've had the same thing happen with YesAsia. At least when my WhatTheBook orders were delayed due to circumstances beyond the owner's control, I was notified of the situation and given a credit toward future purchases ...

I've never had a problem, and I used to live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere in Yeosu. Laughing

My haunts in order of preference:

What the Book: better prices, better trade in fees, a little shy on good modern lit. Friendly staff.

Abbey's: Prices struck me as a little higher, trade in fees a little less but a decent selection of modern lit. Friendly staff.

Foreign Book Store: Korean owned, near noksapyeong station. Highest prices, wouldn't want to inquirer about trade in fees. I get the feeling since it's right next to the US army base, he gets loads of soldiers dumping off boxes of books looking to pick up some beer/hooker cash before they PCS. However, he has a huge selection, plus used magazines. I'll drag myself there if I can't find what I'm looking for at What The Book or Abbey's.

Don't be surprised that unexpected things can happen when running any kind of business. Don't be surprised that hundreds of other customers have had no problems at all. And you gave us the second chance because we gave you credit towards a future purchase (because of the foul up), not because you were being nice to us. I would like to see Yesasia do that.

I have had many customers tell me stories of problems they have had with Amazon and Yesasia. It happens to everybody. All three of us, use other companies to help fullfill our customer's orders. I am sure UPS has lost a number of Amazon orders. It is a fact of life in doing business.

Seriously think about this. You are getting products that are coming from half way around the world. Think of the logistics that is involved. Not everything goes as smoothly as one wants 100% of the time. I wish there was something I could do to make it 100%.

The sad thing in this is that it has happened to you twice and do not blame you for being angry about it. But your use of sarcasm makes it sound like that this happens to every single one of our hundreds of orders. Since may, I have had two boxes lost in transit here to Korea. Your books just happen to be in both of the boxes.

BTW Yesasia has raised their prices up to 66% on short discounted books (certain publishers on certain books do not offer the usual discount to booksellers). For instance:

http://www.whatthebook.com/book/0130334456

http://global.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/pid-1001979042/did-155/code-w/section-books/

http://www.whatthebook.com/book/0275958116

http://global.yesasia.com/en/SrAllDept.aspx?section=books&code=w&version=all&did=155&str=0275958116&x=15&y=16

Besides the UK versions of books, I have a much larger selection of books than yesasia.

I don't know whether it went to Austria or somewhere else. I do know that I got a nice credit toward future purchases which I promptly used -- and I received those books in good time and without issue. Had a subsequent order with WhatTheBook that could not be filled promptly due to a problem with the publisher and again found customer service to be superior. Chris e-mailed me as soon as he was aware of the problem on that one and gave me the choice of continuing to wait or cancelling the order.

I used YesAsia several times before WhatTheBook went online, so I'm not knocking their service (though my first order was about five weeks in getting here because a title was backordered, and I was not notified of the problem until I contacted them). I just found their selection of children's books and teacher resource books to be far more limited.
