In the last 2 years I've only spent a month in Canada, so, looking around now at the latest fashions I've been thinking: is this stuff cool in the west these days or is it just a Koren thing. Here are a few specific questions:
1. Is it fashionable for men to wear silk scarves tied in a little knot and flaring out to the side?
2. Is pink back in for men? (Don Johnson and his Miam Vice buddies would be so happy)
3. Are women really dressing like they're in a Molly Ringwald movie?
4. The pony tail to the side. Don't get me wrong, it looks good, but how come everyone is combing their hair like my grade 2 girlfriend?
5. This one really bugs me cuz Korean women usually look so great in their high heels. But, what's up with those nasty, tan-colored, Eskimo style boots? I don't think I've ever been turned off a Korean women but seeing those things attached to them just kills it all.
6. Then of course, the mullet. A constant source of laughs. |

You ain't in Kansas anymore.
Fashion varies over time and space.
Get used to it.
Making fun of how the locals dress is so newbie, newbie.
I would be interested in hearing what is in fact fashionable back in Canada these days. |

Dang! You sucked the fun out of that one in a hurry.
What do we have left if we can't make fun of the locals
Seriously though, it's not like I'm making fun of traditional Korean dress ... just getting a chuckle out of the stuff they've been wearing lately.
When I first got here in '02 I thought they pretty much dressed the same as back home, now I'm noticing it's getting a bit humorous. |

i don't know about canada but i know i was shocked as all get out at the fact that koreans and americans were wearing very similar fashion. I got here only 2 months ago and back home they are wearing the side ponytails and molly 'ringwaldesqueness' is back. Men's neck sacrves not so much but i haven't seen that a lot here. PINK is back. And those chupa boots are ohh so popular with the rich (but i second that they are god awful). I feel safely secure that I am as unfashionably dressed here as i was back home. It's always nice to finds bits of kansas around the world

Sorry, but I gotta say it:
What is up with all the tiny, tiny socks that just barely reach the ankle, if that. They look OK on some girls wearing athletic shoes, but they look absolutely ridiculous on all men and very unappealing on ajummas. |

those tiny socks are supposed to make it look like you're not wearing anything on your feet apart from trainers (sneakers/runners).
I hate those big eskimo boots though, they're popular in England as well (where they're called Ugg's) and just look crap. |

Its painful in Korea trying to find clothes that I really like. Either you have the conservative drab browns and grey colors, or you have the juvenile sporty stuff emblazoned with brand names. Something about 99% of korean mens clothes just lack the X factor for me..
Meanwhile, the women get a huge selection and variety of cool clothes to look their best. |

korea is the anti-fashion.
i have never, ever seen so many poorly dressed people in one place. it blows my mind when i see women my age dressing in moo-moos that my grandmother wouldn't wear. plaid with polkadots and stripes, shoes that look like castaways from a 1980's trailpark and BAD, BAD hair; the fashion police could spend years giving tickets! just because a korean fashion rag says it's cool, doesn't mean it is. just because gucci's runway models wear it, doesn't mean you should buy the knock-off version!!!! |

Love the boots. Take 'em over high heels anytime. |

i had ugh boots as a 5 year old emblazoned with my rugby league team's colours. they come in all shapes and sizes. |

While I disagree with the neck scarves and the boots to a certain extent, your average Korean is infinitely more fashionable and well-groomed than your average westerner. Too many fat, bug-eyed white dudes with bed-head walking around.
Makes me look damn good, though! |

I don't care much one way or the other about Korean fashion -- decent stuff is available to buy, and what other women wear is their business. But the SHOES! If I could buy half decent shoes here.... I almost bought something that I suddenly realized I only felt like the were similar to something I could buy at home BECAUSE THEY LOOKED EXACTLY LIKE BOWLING SHOES. Seriously. If you're into high heels you're set, but anything like a decent walking shoe? For women, forget it. |

Even mens shoes are impossible. I just got my Doc Martens and that's all I need. Don't need "ye olde Salary man slip ons." |
