¥~ in the Hanguk Ilbo again...this time they didn't massacre the article like they did last time around (though they did make it quite a bit shorter).

Basically it's about why the West treats North Korea differently from countries such as Iraq. I remember back in Dec. 2002 when N. Korea said it would withdraw from the NPT and start producing weapons on its own volition there was a cartoon in the newspaper:
On the left side it had uncle Sam jumping on Saddam Hussein - "I don't have any weapons!" "I don't believe you!"
On the right side it had Kim Jong-Il knocking on a big iron door shouting: "I've got lots of weapons!" to which Uncle Sam says: "I don't believe you!"
At the time it seemed unbelievable that the US would invade Iraq when the inspectors had just gone in and N. Korea seemed to be the obvious threat, but then things don't always follow logic.

Is that a good thing?? Embarassed
I probably come off as being older than I actually am, at least when I'm online. I just turned 25.

Let's see, Korean took me 18 months though I knew Japanese first; without the benefit of that it likely would've taken twice as long (Japanese took me 3 years).

You look much younger than I expected. From your posts I always assumed you were around 43.

Nice article.

btw Mithridates, do you hang out at the Starbucks in Gangnam? I've seen a guy who looks just like you ۾'ing the ladies in the non-smoking section.

Yes, that's me! Usually I find the ladies ۾ me though whenever I take out a weird book that draws their interest. I remember ۾ing one of them before because she was doing some Japanese-Korean translation which interested me, but I as a rule don't talk to people unless there's a reason or something I want to know (often just a trumped-up excuse, but still real)...

Right on, I thought that was you. The one time I saw you, you approached a table of three girls. This was like a year ago and I was too far behind in my work to note the details of your conversation, but I recall you had a magazine or something with you and you were asking them questions. I remember thinking 1. this guy speaks pretty good Korean for a whitey and 2. this guy's got a pair cause they were the best-looking girls in the area. I also remember you had a very soft-spoken, non-threatening approach, and you left with nary a phone number, so I suppose you weren't in your "working" mode.

Props anyway. It isn't easy approaching a table of three in Starbucks, although sometimes I think K-girls cut the white guys some slack for all their supposed quirks. Next time I see you I'll be sure to say 'Hi" -- that is, if you're not mac'ing on anyone. ^^

You mean they would want to hire me, or because the article's suspicious? An intelligence agency would do well to hire me but first they would have to get past the stigma of
NO UNIVERSITY EDUCATION
which I might as well just write in bold letters right on top of any resume I send out.

I would go to the Gangnam Starbucks some two or three times a week, and every day for a month back in October when I was studying for a test. I usually have a book or magazine of some sort in my hand as it's impossible to take one out when on a crowded subway. I can't remember going up to a table of three girls...was it near the back? That's usually where I sit.
But feel free to come over whenever; even if it looks like I'm mac'ing someone I'm usually thinking about something else, and don't realize that I've pulled off a successful operation until after the fact. Wink

hire you. but alas, they require a BA for covert stuff, which is what you'd probably be recruited for.

Their loss, I suppose. Let's see if they still turn me down in a few years when I know Farsi, Pashto, Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish. Wink

Or maybe they already hired me? I don't suppose I'd be allowed to tell. I wonder if they'd still let me post here.
