So my 3 roomates and I are planning on taking a weekend vacation from Gwangju to somewheres in Korea. At first we thought we would go to Seoul, but then decided we can hit that place up anytime. The next most popular place I've heard is Jeju?

Just wondering what people would recommend as a nice scenic, affordable place to go. Is Jeju the best place for us? We've done quite a bit of hiking lately, so we would be more interested in just relaxing.

Please let us know what's the best way to travel (scooter/rent a taxi/or rent a car), and any good hotels/beach houses etc.. mentioning costs or companies you've went through would ne nice also.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I rate Jeju.
Especially this time of year as the crowds will be pretty low.

A good tip is to rent a car. Jeju drivers are a little more chilled out and the roads outside of Jeju city are easy to drive on. If that isn't an option a good bus service is available.

Plenty of good motels in the 50 to 60 000 won price range per night.

I highly recommend Udo off the east Jeju coast near Soengsan Ichulbong. The only beach in Korea I would say is worth going to.

I second Udo. It's a beautiful island. You can rent scooters or bikes or dune buggies there for a couple of hours and just ride around the island. There are some great places to just relax. I've been meaning to go back myself but keep losing the time.

Also, if you like plants and trees and stuff, check out Hallim Park. It's got just about every plant or tree you can find in Korea there plus a couple of caves. it's very cool.

There are a few good beaches, but it's pretty cold now for that. If I were coming here, I'd just head out to the coast road and sit and relax watching the water hit the rocks and have a couple of drinks.

There's plenty to do for a weekend here, and I could give you more info if you like. PM me if you have any specific questions.

Renting a car? Never done it. Don't know anything about it. But cabs are cheap and quick, and the buses go everywhere you need to get to.

Just got back a couple of days ago. Rented a SM3 for 72 hours or something. only cost 70 grand through budget rental +8 extra insurance per day. Check out the website and get someone to book it for you.
Grab yourself a map and some info and cruise. Don't bother pre-booking find a place you like stay the night then move on. That way you can see more of the place. UDO and Marado are both great, as are the lava caves, hallim park, various museums and such like. Get off the beaten path to see the 'real ' cheju if such a place exists

jeju is pretty good- clean air lush but of course still plagued by many of the things mainland korea is e.g. rubbish, lots of concrete etc. Udo or cow island was nicer than jeju- fewer people, nicer beaches adn the perfect size to ride around on a rented bicycle. i went there last year at this time and still could swim- and there was no one on the beach. Other beaches on jeju mainland had too much ruibbish and were kind of crap compared to udo. we also hired a car- we paid 80,000 won for three days because it was the low season. the 'famous' spots were still crawling with busloads of noisy pushy koreans so i'd steer clear of any of the famous spots.

i don't want to come across as harsh...but....get with it! You are traveling to korea and then to jeju...you can certainly then make your way around a small island!
Hotels are all over the island! All over! Every place you turn has a hotel...every town in Jeju has a hotel. You'll have no problem in finding a place. Even if a place were recommended...it would not matter. You might not like it. Hotels go for around 30,000 Won a night up to 1,000,000 Won a night. Transportation is easy as well. Restaurants all over. It's a tourist spot catering to asians...NOT non asians. So...the food may not be to your liking.
