Yeah it does sound like she was stretching her student visa a bit, finished her pHD two years ago, but publishing the thesis in a month- that's one hell of a queue at Kinko's.

I suppose one explanation is that she was deliberately dragging her feet on publishing the thesis so she could stay here, and immigration found out about it.

That's how I felt after six months at my first hagwon. And we were doing lots of arts and crafts.

Having said that, I' m sure from now on she'll be using plastic.

Koreans make it so damn difficult for people to learn korean. Whilst the best university's korean language courses are very fairly priced, the fact you must dedicate 3 months to them whilst not legally being able to work (unless you are already working full time on a work visa) is ridiculous.
It sounds like it's a hundred times worse for chinese or other non westerners, but even for me there are way too many barriers to learning korean. I know many japanese students who have worked hard for years in japan, are in love with korea, and come here for a year to study the language and spend their money (only for it to be illegal to make some extra cash teaching privates or whatever) it's a (bad) joke
