Mistakes happen in all cultures. More often that not, Koreans are not being machiavellian. I'd bet on someone goofing up giving out the digits.

What do those of you with experience in South Korea think about it? Do you think it is more likely that this is an attempt to avoid paying my airfare, or simply an attempt to speed up the process of buying a ticket.

Considering the incompetence as well as the short-sighted greed of the typical hogwon director in Korea, I'd say either one is a distinct possibility.

If the hogwon is waiting for you, and needs you they will find a way to get the credit card numbers right. Tell em straight. "If you want me then you paye the airfare, otherwise go fly a kite". There are enough institutes around here who would be willing to paye your fare, and get the transaction done properly

Price of an airfare isn't something to be trifled with because somebody got the credit card numbers wrong. I would say they are trying to pull a fast one on you. Times are tough now in korea, and they are headed for another IMF soon. That means a lot of buisnesses are trying to cut corners

What makes you think that?

I'd say call the school and tell them what happened. They can always wire the money for the ticket too. Tell them to wire you the money and THEN you will use your credit card. Otherwise, forget it.

Thanks for the advice.

It seems this was an honest mistake. The school got things straightened out with the travel agency, but they did not bother to tell me that. I had been told by the travel agency that a ticket would be delivered to me at home and I would leave the day after it arrived. During a 5:40 AM phone call I was informed that I was supposed to get my ticket at the airport -- for an 8:00 AM flight that morning! I rescheduled.

I rescheduled because 2 hours and 20 minutes is not enough time to pack, arrange for a ride to the airport, get to the airport, get through security, and make the flight.
