|
|
I am trying to choose a textbook for a nine-year old Grade two elementary student. She's just started learning English and her skills are as basic as basic gets. Her speaking: just the little bit she's learned in two months, and a few other words here & there. Her reading & writing: She knows her ABC's, but little beyond that.
She has just finished Englishtime 1, and it was appropriate for her level. However for certain reasons, I can't continue with the Englishtime series. The book I'm considering for her now is Let's Go 1, but am concerned that it may be a bit too difficult for her. Another book I think would be appropriate for her is Discovery (1 or 2), but it wasn't available at the bookstore I had checked out today.
It seems like most books written for someone with her skill level, at least the ones available in my local bookstore, seem to be geared towards Kindergarten students, assume that the student has some reading ability, or are just terribly written books.
Can anyone suggest a textbook they've had success with? |

If she is not getting any contact time with a Korean teacher, then you might be in for a tough time with her, unless your Korean skills are good enough to reinforce english lessons and explain early grammar concepts. I'd pick out an english/korean textbook, if you're not comfortable with reinforcing in Korean.
A good english-only text that I like to use at that level, is the Step-By-Step series, which might be worth a look into. |

She was fine with Englishtime 1, and I'm comfortable teaching her. I want to stick to an English-only textbook. I consider stimulating pictures (i.e. "busy" pictures), vocabulary, and phonics a must. Simple dialogue, expressions, or accompanying songs would be a nice bonus.

Thanks for the advice. Do you know where it is available? |

I've seen it around at some bookstores that carry an esl section, but I know for a fact that you can find it at Bandi & Luni's in the COEX mall. Go to the esl section and it'll be face up in the first few display tables, intermixed with stacks of New Interchange and Let's Go. |
