i've recently heard some really scary stories about women being raped by their taxi drivers. what is up with that? in one situation the victim reported it to the police and they didn't do anything about it. anyway, if you're out drinking try to go home with a friend and not alone.

I would say it is somewhat true. A buddy of mine was a taxi driver. He said when a girl didnt have the cash to pay he would drive her to a hotel where she would 'pay'.

I am sure it does happen...but so far what you have in here are "stories"...that should give anyone a little pause.

Women taking cabbies alone should be extra careful as a rule (unfortunate but a sad fact of life). Then again, I would think this advice applies to cabbies everywhere.

I am not denying that it does happen....read more carefully please.

I am saying that in here all we have is secondhand stories (your friend told you is precisely that when you report it on here).

Rapes unfortunately do happen here. As I said, women taking cabbies alone at night should always (regardless of locale) be extra careful. This is a sad but sometimes true fact of life.

What your taxi driver friend told you relates to something that does occur, no denying that. However, the frequency of this and level of threat that women should feel cannot be deduced with any accuracy from what we have here as they are stories or second hand testimonies.

No need to take this as a denial of what you are saying as I agree that this does happen here.

Fugitive Serial Killer Kills Himself
A fugitive suspect in the serial murders of five women killed himself yesterday, as police attempted to arrest him in Pohang, North Kyongsang Province.

The 29-year-old, identified only as Kim, stabbed himself in the neck and was sent immediately to hospital. Police say he later died from the self- inflicted injuries.

Police are now interviewing his younger brother, who was a witness at the scene.

Kim and a 25-year-old accomplice are suspected of kidnapping and killing five women in Kyonggi Province last month, luring the unsuspecting victims into a sedan masquerading as a taxi.

The two were arrested Tuesday, but due to a lax police escort, Kim managed to escape custody.

Policemen aren't the great pillars of society either. When they are found out, the whole thing gets put in the miscellaneous tray.

I remember hearing those stories back in 97. all the girls told me about that..

I had a student tell me about the dangers of taxi's. It started when she told me of her fear to walk at night in her city of Chonan. I was surprised. I asked her why she was afraid. She gave me the following story.

Her sister attends a Catholic High School. Each day the parents meet their daughter and drive her home from school. One night she studied in the library until 11PM. When she finished her parents were not there to meet her. She called them and no one naswered. She decided to walk home. She never made it home. Witnesses reported seeing her being followed by 3 men. She had called a friend but did not talk on her phone and her friend disconnected the call. The girl was about 15 and was raped and murdered. In that same city a girl is missing. The police found the girl's clothes in a trash bin.

So sad.......

I always thought Korea was a safe place and I guess compared to American streets it is, but this is just tragic.

When i was living in Korea, my Korean husband (at the time-boyfriend) also told me to be very careful about riding in taxis at night by myself. He said that some korean girls had had bad experiences and he didn't want anything bad to happen to me. He said sitting in the back seat was much safer than the front because you could escape more easily if necessary. I never had a bad experience with a taxi driver in my four years of living there but knowing that there was the possiblity of the driver not being a good guy definitely kept me much more aware than had i been left in the dark about this possibility. Better safe than sorry....

Hmm... maybe that's why my husband called me when I was out with friends last Saturday and told me to take the subway home and not a cab...
