That is some of the best advice I have heard on this forum. I know I wasted about 3 years in Korea being a little self destructive. During that time I learnt a lot though, and having come out of it, I really understand your words.

that's some sad stuff

the saddest stories i've heard in korea are from the adoptee gyopos that i've met.. weird stuff that their parents have done, complete neglect for their children, abandonment. Terrible stuff.

Most people are good at the core, and people who do bad things to others or who have sad story's are not bad, they're weak, that's all. And weakness is the human characteristic of all. I'm most of us are the same, we're just out there every day doing the best we can to make sure we don't become one of these sad stories ...

I've told this story before on here, can't remember the thread though. One day about 6 in the evening(2000) I was on my way to meet my wife when I found an English teacher I knew passed out in the street with a bottle of soju next to him. He woke & muttered something about being a drunk. I was trying to figure out what to do when a car pulled up & a couple of Korean teenaged girls got out. Are you a friend of blank's they asked. I said I was. they told me they were there to take him to his next class which I have to say surprised me. They then picked him up put him in the car & drove off.
The scary thing was that the same thing happened the next day, but in a different part of town & this time about 4 in the afternoon, I found him passed out & the girls came along & took him away.

They were there to take him to his next class? What's a guy gotta do to get fired?
==============================================

Not to be self-pitying, or maybe to be, whatever, but I think my experiences have had a lot in them that is undesirable. And I know such has been true for many others.

Very Happy This was Chon ju back when it was still spelt that way. I heard stories of a guy passing out in class & foaming at the mouth cos he'd drunk so much the previous night, he didn't get fired & another who was outsourced to a business class who told his class not to come the next morning cos he was going out drinking & wouldn't make it. Of course they showed up. When challenged by his employer he simply said I told them not to come to class. He didn't get fired.

This guy is smarter than the rest of us. Rather than fighting korean irrationality with western logic. He simply acted irrationally himself. The koreans could relate to this, and probably felt they had a great employee Laughing

I wish there was a prize for "whoa!". I'd vote for this one. A story worth retelling. In North America, you wouldn't last long in your job living like this. In Korea, oddly, I'd imagine most hagwon bosses would think "there but before the grace of god go I".

We all have stories. Every single last one of us. Most are running from something, someone, somewhere, etc. Some are running...but at a slower pace. Others are racing. Some are hoping to get by just another day until something better comes along while other keep passing by something better. We all have only one life...and then we die...and death is forever.
So...for now...I just keep running and enjoying!!! Cause I may not wake up tomorrow!

I expected to see Bogart and Ingrid Bergman after reading this.

Guy finishes his three years, goes back home for six years, returns to Korea for his brother in laws wedding, and starts asking people if he can be a guest speaker in their classes while he's visiting because he misses teaching.

I've got more. Smile When I was in Suwon working for a school that outsourced, I was given a new class(I wasn't happy cos it meant I had to drive from Suwon to Osan & back just for one class) as a replacement for my best mate at this school. When I asked why, they said that he'd been in Korea too long & kept Korean time, so was always late. Smile

Hmmm . . .

We have 2 dipsomaniacs here in the An-yang area; one sounds like the soju-soaker above (stories include falling off a balcony, and being stabbed in the back so hard with a butcher knife by his ex-gf, that he broke 2 ribs, and the tip broke off & stayed lodged!).

The other is a younger guy, who when he gets started will drink damned near anything - including sand out of otherwise empty bottles & cups full of butter or pancake syrup.

I can't see how they could possibly teach anything but kindy???

Shudder!

G.
