That is exactly the reason. Yes, "living" is a gerund, but gerunds act like nouns. In a sentence which is structured:
[SUBJECT] makes [OBJECT].
Both the subject and object must be nouns. For example:
Bob makes model airplanes quickly. (Object: model airplanes [noun])
A warm climate makes living here pleasant. (Object: living here [acting like a noun])
As you can see, both of these sentences are structured in the same way, and thus both require nouns to serve as the object of the verb "make". Therefore, an infinitive ("to live") would simply not make sense in the second sentence. |
