So yesterday I had an interview for another job in a city near Seoul, thanks to my girlfriend who works there and they want to hire me which is great news. However I need to tell the boss now at my present school and hand in my notice.
It says on my contract that I have to give a months notice before I leave so hopefully I can start in January. The new school wants me to start in 2 weeks but that won't be possible as they would have to pay about 1 million won to my present school so that they could find a replacement. The new school doesn't want to do that so they will wait till January.
I was told that all I need is my E-2 visa, my degree scroll and a release letter from my current school. Hopefully this won't be a problem but after all this is Korea and I'm sure that the other teachers at the school will be pretty pissed off at me leaving early. Do I need anything else before I change jobs? What if my boss doesn't want to give me a release letter? What do I do then? I wonder what they will do for the remaining month while I'm there? They will probably treat me like crap or ignore me I guess.
Also my new school said that I would have to go to Japan or Bangkok to change my visa next year. Where do people normally go? What is the procedure like? Anything that I need to be aware of? Is it possible that I can go there for a weekend with my girlfriend? Has anybody done that? Thanks for your help. |

Make sure you give a written copy of your notice to your boss. Keep one for yourself. Make one and deliver it to immigration along with a copy of your contract with the notice part highlighted. Keep another for the labour board. Note on each one how many signed copies have been made, and who has them.
Get a release letter signed and stamped by your boss quickly, while having a polite conversation about leaving according to your contract. Keep mentioning how they are saving on severance and your plane ticket. Once you have that release letter signed and stamped, guard it with your life. |
