i have plans to use a movie to teach a listening class for a month in between text books and was looking for suggestions....they are pre middle school with a decent ability and i'd like to find a movie that most of them won't have seen so i can get creative with writing assignments etc. (i.e. write about what you think happens next). it obviously has to be PG and has to have a decent and fairly clear amount of english dialogue. here's the real catch - i need to find in on video cassette. i've thought of asking the local rental shop how much he would charge me to rent it for the whole month (my boss would cover it of course) but ideally i would buy it - and if anyone knows where you can buy video cassettes that would be helpful as well (i'm in incheon but seoul is accessible)
the only ideas i have so far is to use jurassic park...or men in black...
any ideas?? |

oh by the way if you can only find a movie on DVD you could always tape it onto a tape. |

This is probably out of their range, but since we're on the topic, if you want to teach through movies, I recommend also using some great script supplementary material that isolates vocab and comprehension at http://www.eslnotes.com/
I've been going through the 'A Beautiful Mind' vocab for about a month with some of my advanced adult classes and it's been going over quite well.
Also, if you can hook up a computer or laptop to internet in the classroom, and you have a shorter class length, you can go to www.apple.com/trailers and play 3 or 4 during the class, for comprehension, creative writing (what do you think will happen next? What could this sub-plot be about? etc..), and topical discussion. |

| In my experience video rental shops are happy to accommodate longer term loans for a modest fee, as long as its not a popular new release. |

| A colleague of mine had great success with teaching dialogue/viewing episodes of The Simpsons to intermediate level+ classes. He'd print out a copy of the script for everyone and go over all the difficult vocabulary/idiomatic expressions bit by bit, and then watch the part of the episode they'd studied. Took some time to get through a whole episode-he'd repeat what they'd already done each time and go a little further until they could watch the whole show in one go. It appealed to all ages--they loved it! |
