I already know the thing about cats, why Koreans don't like them etc etc and I even found out they get boiled for rheumatism remedies, but what I can't figure out is why many foreigners in Korea aren't interested in cats too.

My ad for my cat has been on the buy/sell/trade forum (so please don't knock me for the off-topic) for a little more than a week I think and the only person who replied to me was me, to add some more info.

There are a couple of other people advertising cats to give away in the forum so my appeal is for anyone who normally doesn't read the buy/sell/trade and thinks they could give our cats a home to please let us know.

I know its irresponsible to have a pet if you know you are going to leave, but in truth I wasn't sure and I was going to make plans to send her home but it's ludicrously complicated to get her to New Zealand and she might not even survive the flight from what I've heard.

Please please please if you want some company, help us out. I know in my situation I rescued this cat in the first place and it would really depress me if I couldn't find her a home. I even tried asking the vet if he would euthanise her because I find it more humane than life on the Korean street, and he said no because she's too healthy.

But I just want to say that I NEVER check the Buy/Trade/Sell forum, because I'm basically never looking to buy, trade or sell. I guess you just reminded me why I should check there -- since it appears to be against the rules to post that kind of "ad" anywhere else. Good to know.

lfbh, i brought my cat from the us in may, and although it was complicated and a bit expensive, it was SO worth it. i dont know who told you that your animal might DIE in transit, whoever did was misinformed. as long as you do not drug your cat, her container is properly labled, and the plane doesn't crash, you will both arrive safely in nz.

although im certain there are differences between our countries, i am willing to offer up any information from my experience that could aid in you taking your fuzzy friend home with you. i encourage you to begin looking into it as soon as possible.

and please, i implore you, DO NOT reconsider euthanizing your animal. this is cruel and unnecessary, as there are shelters that will take your animal in the event that no one else is able to.

hey man check what I read again...I did not buy this cat on an impulse, I have even walked past the many mangy cats I have seen near my house but this one just kept on BEING there outside and was getting more and more pitiful and she had definitely been someone's pet before as she wasn't afriad of humans. At the time I thought I was doing the right thing, there's no need to make me feel like I didn't know what I was getting into.

As for the NZ thing, it takes more than 6 months as there is no such thing as rabies in our country, and I just found that out and I am leaving for sure in February. I was more than ready to take her with me so don't treat me like I'm some part-time animal lover.

There. Thats the truth so don't slam me anymore.

Dave's is not the only means for communicating with other foreigners. The "other" site has a Buy/Sell/Trade forum, there's Seoul Classified, you could probably find someone willing to take on your cat.

And don't beat yourself up for housing a cat for a matter of months or a year or whatnot. You gave it a good life in that time, and someone else can do the same. It might be nice though as a favor to the next owner to get your kitty spayed or get its shots up to date, before passing it along.

DON'T let her go and don't take her to the vet to have her put down, though...that's the waste of a perfectly healthy kitty.

It's very difficult to find a home for an animal here because there are just so many who need them, and because cats aren't as popular as they are in Western countries. (But even in North America there are many, many homeless cats killed because no one will adopt them.)

I don't think you should consider killing or abandoning her, and I really hope you will try to take her back with you to N.Z. if there's any way you possibly can. Maybe the Korea Animal Protection Society can provide some advice, or help find a home for her if it turns out that you really can't keep her. I don't think there are any guarantees that your cat will be adopted, but IMO if there's no way you can keep her then your best choice is either KAPS or Arumpoom, another animal protection group.

For those who suggest taking the pet back to new zealand it's a very long diffcult and expensive process to bring in animals as they have very strict biosecurity laws. The aussies have the same deal for the obvious reason that both are island nations with agricultural economies.

As for your condrum I think that foreigners who aren't lifers here really need to think carefully about adopting pets as most of us are temporary vistors here but pets are a more long term comitment. If you can't see yourself in Korea in 10 years don't adopt a pet unless you know 100% that you can take it to your next prot of call.

Of course this is a little rich coming from me as I still have a cat at my parents house!
