I've heard of that in Korea, just forgot about it. Given it's a communal culture very concerned with conforming and what other people think, punishment by that kind of humiliation would be very effective. And very over the top. Imagine being brought up in that kind of family atmosphere, where that's possible. And guess who'll be harsh like that to her kids. The once shaven one. And I call this one, Mongolian justice.

Maybe the girl did something really bad, as that does sound like a harsh punsihment for a teenage girl in Korea. In the west her peers might even say, wow, cool. In Korea I can imagine they might not be so accepting, but may understand why.

So seldom I agree spot on with you. This is cruelty and it is abusive. It probably is also not illegal or unheard of in the States, either.

What if said girl is starting to become sexually active? What if Mum and Dad have done everything they can think of to stop her but it's just not working? What if they're under a great deal of stress, and fear for their daughter having to go through a teenage pregnancy? Wouldn't her chances of getting pregnant be reduced if she had an undesirable looking shaved head?

I saw where an older brother tried to shave the head his younger sister. They were in their 20's. It was because she was dating a divorced man and had brought shame to the family. I am sure that is not the case with this girl. I am not sure of her age. It sounds like she did something to bring shame to the family. Probably failed to get all A's.

Remember there's that Korean singer these days with a short-as hair do. Many of my older students would rather get the cut than face not being able to sit down - as at least one of them reports this happens a lot in her house - or being punched on the side of her head by her dad.

And yes, I told my supervisor who is very open-minded and she said there's nothing we can do.

In my class, humiliation works a treat and is better than penalising students. I take away phones, mp3 players, notebooks, school textbooks all the time. I make them go and tell the girls at reception what they have done, or give them a special seat at the front and make them answer every question.

I think in this case it all depends on what the student has done. I think its pretty extreme, but at least she can still walk. Some of these spoiled kids need to face what they have done IF it is that bad. If its not bad, then the parents are cruel without a doubt.

I used to put them in the closet and make them pray to the good lord Jesus for forgiveness. I'd also call them dirty girls and belittle their self esteem.

Either that or I watched Carrie again last night and was impressed with the mothering displayed.

... somehow I don't think this would work for teenagers. It would basically be like advertising to every young male in her school that "this girl puts out".

I was going to ignore this post, but then I thought to myself, 'why not share my expereience?'.

ok, my dad never shaved my hair, but he surely threatened me a lot. it's not just my dad. TV shows often reflect real life, and if you pay attention to it, you will often see or hear father-looking actors yelling at their daughter, "stop ####### or I will shave your hair!"

this 'shaving' punishment is usually for girls who take a decidedly unorthodox approach to dating/dress code/curfew/etc. i guess korean fathers often think by shaving their daughter's hair, they are more likely to controltheir daughter's behavior.

maybe you need to stop watching to much TV.

I have never watched a television show that wasn't a sitcom(which doesn't portray real life at all) where the father has told the daughter that he will shave of all her hair.

Can you tell me what these TV shows are????

Teenage boys are every bit as concerned with popularity as teenage girls are. Sure, they're horny little shaggers who are unlike the girls in that the girls need a reason to have sex, and the boys only need a place. But it would still be more of a source of embarrassment rather than popularity to run around telling everyone how you shagged the bald girl.

Several years ago there was a story in the paper about a teacher who hit a girl real hard because he caught her smoking in the school grounds or something like that. Anyway he ended up killing the girl from the force of the blow. The upshot of the whole thing though was that the teacher wasn't punished and he continues to teach.

I somehow think that the story would be somewhat different these days with studebts having digital cameras and stuff
