So this guy driving a van stops me in the street today and tells me that he is the president of this local company (down the street). Conversation is as follows:
TUM: (politely) "That's nice for you, isn't it?"
HIM: (blank stare) "Are you English teacher?"
TUM: (tempted to say "No, Me Roosian" [Russian] )"Yes"
HIM: "My wife and I are looking for English teacher to teach us English. I speak some English but I want it better."
TUM: (still politely) "Well I hope you find one"
HIM : (whips out his business card and gives it to me) "Only once or twice a week at nights and we pay"
Do you want to?"
TUM (dropping all pretense at ignorance) "Sorry but my contract forbids any teaching outside the hakwon. Maybe it would be best if you found another teacher who doesn't mind illegal work."
HIM: "Do you know teachers?"
TUM: "No, not really anyone who does that. But thanks anyways."
This is like the fourth time in five months. What is it with these people? Do I wear a sign around my neck saying "I do privates"? Sorry, just had to vent. |

A restaurant manager ask me to privately teach his son. He would not accept my "No." He asked several times about when I would be available to teach his son. |

Nobody will be making money off of privates.
Privates are illegal.

Ok, TUM, relax...yes, you do have a preverbial sign around your neck...but the good news is that all you have to do is say "no." Unless, of course, you get a twit like RR's restaurant manager...then just beech slap 'im!
As for the sign...well, now I understand how women feel about unwarranted approaches from guys.
TMKATM, could you explain why 'nobody will be making money off of privates'? I've seen this statement before, not sure if it was from you, but....I know the 'will' implies the future, soooooooo....

People keep wondering why I don't do privates. "You can make a lot of money!" I have to answer back "well, because I don't need the money". My hagwon job pays the bills, puts money in the bank. I'm not here to pay off any debts. I'm old. I'm here to take a break. I like the free time.
I was sitting in Starbucks and some young lovely wanted to know if I could tutor her. "Sure," I answered. "I'm always at this Starbucks. Come at this time and I can help."
She never did return. Hrmph. I wasn't even going to charge her (depending on what she wanted...). I would have just enjoyed the hour of convo. |

What is with them indeed.
At my first job here, the foreign teacher I was replacing tried to recruit me to take over her privates. I told her I wasn't interested, but she kept at me. I just kept ignoring her. Finally she left, but then about a week later this Korean guy showed up IN MY CLASSROOM, demanding that I teach his kids. I informed him that it was illegal and he just kept on with," I'm good friend with manager, I'm been coming here for much years. Last teacher here teach my kids, you teachee my kids!" as he hands me a business card.
I finally just walked away.
But I often wondered if he had an arrangement with the boss, because after that incident, the boss was always on my case. |

Well I did do privates for awhile, but I got sick of going an hour across town to do them and an hour to get back. They were set up by my school and happened to be the bosses nephew and his friends.
They decided to take a break and never got in touch with me again, which was fine by me. It wasn't really worth my time to travel two hours even if it was for three sessions. |

I've done privates - though I don't anymore - but I never did them for random strangers off the street. Immigration has been known to employ some dirty tricks to catch people doing such things (don't know if they've done this) and who can say it ain't a trap of some sort.
Also don't do them in your own backyard. Traveling ten or fifteen minutes away - to another hagwon's territory - isn't too much of a headache and your boss might not be quite so irritated if he/she finds out you're doing them. |

Well, I was pretty sure this guy was on the legit, but yeah there is that.
Plus my hakwon is only five minutes walk away from this guy's company. My students wander by all the time.
Even if privates were legal, I still wouldn't do them, I value my free time too much. Plus I don't need the money. I do overtime at my hakwon and make 2.4 a month, 2.2 net. So both in terms of time and money I really don't need any more "work" |

You guys must be real good looking. I never used to get many of these offers. I would get the "we be friend-I buy you beer."
That was better in a way since I wouldn't need to worry about lessons etc etc. |

I know. Sucks to be me. That's why I come to this board. Such a warm and comforting atomosphere.
Hey if people can complain about Koreans staring at them, I can vent too. |

I hear ya, but for the other way around. I worked privately religiously, and made serious bank over the years. Why? True, I did not have much free time while in Korea, but the free time I did have was spent wisely, for sure.
The reasons were so that my wife and I could go to America with no financial worries. I came to Korea with no debts, and arrived back Stateside with well over 6 figures (US). I love being able to pay for our cars and education (through PhD) in full, handsome down payment on a house, and not work while in school. My time here is bliss. I am able to take a job that doesn't pay all that great, but allows for great research projects to be had....I guess I did them for all the reasons you won't. Odd how that is...
