As if I didn't before, but this just adds more ammo to the fire....our private school required Korean teachers to appear at a recent protest against the changing of laws for Private Schools. The law, as discussed recently, is about nepotism and the hiring of family as staff, as well as including more parents and non-family on the school board. Private school owners would lose tremendous amounts of power if the law goes into effect, and they have been creating a huge stink. I have read in the newspapers that they even threatened to close the doors of the schools (I highly doubt that one)!
This law change has been discussed before on here, but what I found interesting is that the Korean teachers were told they needed to attend the protest. They had to do so even though most all of them (I heard) totally disagreed with the protest. In fact, they were strongly on the PRO CHANGE side of things, but when told to by the owner, who is King, they feared for their jobs and attended the protest. After hearing this, I imagine that nearly every school did the same thing, and that most people at that protest did, in fact, desire change.
One Korean teacher refused to go, and simply didn't appear, and now has fallen out of favor with the owners. According to him, they now nit-pick about everything and give him a stern look and a cold shoulder when they see him. He says he doubts he will be hired back next year, and I believe it. Sad, because the students say he's a good teacher and they seem to like him too -- his English is among the best on staff as well. |
