I bought the Lord of the Rings (Return of the King) Game for my XP Office (Korean) computer NEW from Lottle World.

However after loading it - I can't seem to play it as it tells me that I do not have DIRECT3D loaded it to work.

Where can I get/download this from - so I can play the game.

I am in the Jamsil area - if anybody knows what this problems is or can help me out - I would greatly appreciate it.

New pc or just new game? It's your pc, or a work pc? (your post doesn't make that entirely clear...) Any idea what video card it has? It sounds like either the video card isn't up to handling this game or the video card drivers need to be updated. As far as I'm aware it's not as simple an issue as 'where can I download Direct 3D?'

Isn't Direct3d a subcomponent of DirectX?

Download DirectX 9.0c here and see if that helps at all.

I'm surprised they didn't bundle directx in the installation disk, they usually do for games like that.

Its my PC - but it has Microsoft/Windows Office XP.....

I don't have a clue about computers - and I have already downloaded DirectX 9.0 -

I think you are right and it has to do with the video card... however I don't have a clue about what my computer has - or about Video cards etc.... thats where I need someone to help me -

I am willing to pay someone if they come around to my officetel and solve the problem....

Onboard graphics? Sounds like you may not have a video card at all, but the graphics may be on the mainboard. If this is the case, it probably isn't up to snuff.

Look in the "Control Panel", "System", "Hardware", "Device Manager", "Graphics Adapter" and see what it says. Post this back if it's not clear what it means.

Ok....look inside the box or just peek around the back. Where does the monitor cable connect to the computer? If it's near the middle, or straight up and down, parallel to the box itself, then it's probably onboard graphics. The connecto for onboard graphics is part of the mainboard, not an AGP card, which will be lower and perpendicular to the box.

Looking inside, you should see an AGP card slightly below the CPU cooler or northbridge cooler. Again, if it's onboard, there will be no AGP card (graphics card), but the maiboard is where the monitor will connect. It will be obvious if there is a graphics card there or not.

You will need to learn to navigate around the OS a bit more. Are you versed in English Windows? If so, feel your way....it's the same. If you are a novice Windows user, may I suggest buying Windows in English as your next software choice? It will save you a lot of grief, in this situation for example. That, or learn Korean mucho pronto....

A tip...much of the lingo is the same in Korean as English. If you can read Korean, you will be able to navigate to the place I outlined in my previous post. (control panel), ý (system), ϵ (hardware), ġ (device manager), ÷̾(display adapter)...

Okay - I followed your Hangul instructions (navigated around) - it told me SiS650 (what do I do now?)

Integrated graphics=bad/no gaming. Sad

Buy a graphics card.

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=30065

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2292

http://www.danawa.co.kr Click "VGA" in the top menu. This is a pretty up-to date offering at Yongsan here in Korea.

Do your homework on this before jumping in. You are looking for an "AGP" card, probably 128MB, and preferably DX9 (current ATI and Nvidia).

The speed of your CPU is a factor as well. If you can post back some more of your system specs, I can help a bit more. Probably Hank Scorpio and Sage Monkey can throw in some wisdom here as well.

If all you want to do is play that one game, then just about any card will be fine. I don't know much about the game, but I do know that EA are not known for their tech. They use crappy game engines (they are cheap...the engine and the company) that are only now probably catching up to DX8, in which case a GeForce 4 64MB card will be fine.....and cheap.

If you like RPG games, Sage Monkey has some sage advice...he knows more about the genre than I. I can tell you that EA is fine for sports games, but I wouldn't let them even try to entertain me outside of that.

Depending on how cheap of a box he got he may not even have an AGP slot. I remember seeing way too many cheapass Korean mainboards that limited you to the onboard GPU or getting a PCI card *shudder*.

Yepper. Gaming on a PC really isn't that difficult, just remember the holy trinity: GPU, CPU, RAM.

Okay - thanks -

is anybody interested in coming to my apartment and installing one for me - and getting the game running - I will pay you a reasonable price for your service...

I am located at Jamsil/Mongchontoseong station -

If I tried to do it myself - i would probably destroy my computer - so I only want someone experienced in computers to touch my CPU - otherwise are there any computer guys in korea who do this kind of thing?
(Make an apartment visit to install the Graphics/video card into the computer?)
Thanks

Don't sell yourself short. The reason it's called a slot is because you can only insert the card one way, and it's pretty obvious.

Just turn off your computer, unplug everything, remove the cover and voila! You'll see a row of slots about 6 inches long, the PCI slots are probably white with a brown or blue slot above them. That's the AGP slot and that's your target. Don't worry about getting an AGP card into a PCI slot, that'd be physically impossible. Just seat the card in there, screw in the top plate like all your other cards are (there's only one screw), close up the box, reattach all the wires and reboot.

From there you go to either ATI's or Nvidia's sites (depending on card type) and download your new driver. That's all there is to it, and it'd be criminal to pay someone especially since you'll be breaking the "computer intimidation" barrier.
