Speaking of EA, they just bought the NFLPA license for five years.

I'm sure you meant $49.99....that's the price for the pre-order version on all platforms (PC, Xbox and PS2).

Was the pre-order price set before or after EA won the NFL exclusive license?

I haven't a clue. I am no lawyer, but it shouldn't matter....just because they had some good luck, shouldn't mean they crank up the price for folks who didn't pre-order....something tells me they can't do that.

Can they? Question

I don't know the answer to that, but EA is going to have to make that $300 million back somehow. The pre-order price was set this past August.

Electronic Arts scores NFL exclusive

The $300 million deal likely will boost growth at the video-game maker's Maitland operation.

By Chris Cobbs | Sentinel Staff Writer
Posted December 15, 2004

An exclusive, five-year contract with the National Football League is expected to add new muscle to video-game maker Electronic Arts Inc., whose Maitland-based studio produces the hot-selling Madden NFL series.

The football deal, valued at an estimated $300 million, gives Electronic Arts exclusive rights to use NFL stadiums, player names, uniforms, video and audio.

The studio has signed a five-year lease with a three-year opt-out clause, spokeswoman Trudy Muller said.

Along with solidifying the company's growth, the contract virtually eliminates a challenge Madden NFL experienced this summer and fall from a rival game.

EA recently cut the price of the Madden game by $20, from $49.95 to $29.95, after a new game, ESPN NFL 2K5, went on sale in July for $19.95.

But the new licensing arrangement with the NFL could mean a return to higher prices when EA's next version, Madden NFL 2006, appears next August, Brown said.

"We believe this is a premium game that should command a premium price," he said. "Market conditions next August, when Madden NFL 2006 is due, will dictate what the price will be."

The rival ESPN game can continue to be sold next year, but it can't be altered or improved with new content, Brown noted. "It can remain on store shelves, but nobody wants to watch last season's players."

The NFL 2K5 game, marketed by Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN subsidiary, is produced by Sega Sammy Holdings and Take Two Interactive Software.

Madden has outsold the ESPN title so far by a 60-to-40 ratio in unit count and by an 80-to-20 ratio in terms of revenue, Brown said.

The Madden game has previously fought off challenges from Midway, 989 Sports and Microsoft to retain its dominance of the market for pro-football video games.

I gotta add my two cents here about EA. I bought copies of Medal of Honor Allied Assault and Breakthrough. I could not install it because I kept getting a 'file transfer error' each time. So I took it back and got another one. SAME THING HAPPENED!. So, now I have store bought legal copies of MOHAA and can't do jack with them.
So, am I wrong to think that the media, the actual CD is of poor quality or am I again an idiot? I bought and installed Pacific Assault without a problem. (DVD) . Shoot I even bought another copy of C&C Red Alert 2 because it's just a plain cool game.

I never liked how EA bought Origin or how Squaresoft bought Enix. I'm a big RPG fan and the engine the game is using is generally the last thing I care about. One of my favourite games ever was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night because of the setting, story and music. A lot of companies underestimate the importance of music...I remember skipping a day of work way back in 1999 when playing that game because Alucard was jumping through the cave with the waterfall and the light reflected from somewhere in the back, some kind of ambient music with piano was playing in the back and I thought "I could go to sleep now, get up and file, or I could keep playing this game until I'm satiated..." which is what I did.

A. Men.

Most game soundtracks sound as if they were simply an afterthought, at best. The original Metroid gets my vote for best soundtrack. Even on that ancient platform it sounded far out. Quake III (or was it II, hell I can't remember) was nice, what with Trent Reznor adding his two cents and all. Creepy. You just knew your eyeballs were going to be ripped out around the next corner. The Halo2 soundtrack has moments of brilliance, managing to be melancholy and "Let's Stomp Some Ass" at the same time. The makers of Fable obviously put some thought into the Danny Elfmanesque main title, although it gets repetetive. The Zerg in Starcraft have a nice, foreboding theme.
