If you didn't have all the relevant info in order for you to offer your advice, wouldn't it be in good form to ask straightforward questions to ascertain the truth? You immediately took the low road of condescension and assumption by telling someone to suck it up and be a responsible adult.

That's totally uncalled for at any time, but even moreso because you said it when you admittedly did not have all the relevant info.

Please try to be more responsible in your posts.

Well SOOOOOOOOOOOOORREEEEEEYYYY. You said you have no problems with your school. If its an apartment issue, get it resolved. If you dont like your town then suck it up. If you have other issues, you didnt say so. Do you have a stalker? is the ajumma downstairs mean to you? You never stated that there are serious issues. So many people break their contracts for the stupidest reasons.

Where you're living is equally as important as the job. You have to spend a year of your life potentially in the same neighborhood, so it better have some sort of attraction to it, or you're simply asking to drive yourself bonkers. I think you've got the original poster confused with those other people who do midnight runs; the guy is simply trying to do some research on the best way to go about changing jobs amicably and legally.

There was another guy on here by the name of ryleeys who had this same feeling of contractual obligation as you mentioned. In his case, however, he was placed in a ridiculous situation and everyone told him that he should leave. He passed up better job offers as well due to this contractual obligation. Considering how important the contract can potentially be to a school (re: not very), this heroic diatribe seems ill-placed.

You sign a contract, you finish it. Unless the school is being a major craphole and screwing you over. If its the neighborhood, cmon. We are adults. The OP should have checked the neighborhood before signing.

Are you sure this is the angle that you want to retort with? Or do you want to take a moment to rethink of a new defense? Because I don't know of how any teacher who is signing from abroad and may or may not have any street knowledge of Korea, is expected to audit the quality of living in blah-dong vs. blah-dong in Anywhere, South Korea.

There is always the internet. I can find enough info about most places in Korea quite easily. If not the neighborhood then atleast the town. Why not google the info or ask on Daves? Cmon.

When I came here about 4 years ago, I had a lot of info about the town I was going to. And no, it wasnt Seoul, it was a small city actually.

So, would it be fair to say then, that posters who may have left out some relevant info, should be warned that they will have it coming?

Given the scope of things, that's a shot in the dark and you know it. And you were originally talking about neighborhood, so don't try to slip 'town' into there, as a way out. I firmly believe that at this point you are chasing for any slippery angle to avoid the thought of eating crow about your earlier post. No one is backing you into a corner to apologize to the OP, for chrissakes! Just try to curb the potentially inflammatory comments when newbs ask questions! Evil or Very Mad

In Korean, sure you can find a lot of info. But I tell ya what...find me some information on Tangjung, in English, and I'll be more willing to believe that information about an area is easy to find.

Asking on Dave's is nearly useless. People blah-blah-blah about a couple of bars and a park and the closest exit to the city and woo-hoo we've got ourselves tons of information. Even in the same city, different parts have different perspectives. My first year in Cheonan was noisy and full of dirty air. My second year in Cheonan was very quiet, peaceful, and clean. The city itself is still a cesspool of dust in the air and has way too much traffic, so what gives? You cannot predict everything over the internet.

The stalwartness about the contract still stands. My first year I played that "honor to employer" game; but now my own satisfaction comes first. If I ain't satisfied, I ain't wasting another 8 months in a useless situation.

Anyways, the three of us going back and forth about whether or not this guy should be allowed to change jobs with the board's consent is retarded.

They sure do when they jump on my back for replying to the info they provided. Im not a mind reader. All I read was that she has no problems at work and she simply dislikes her neighborhood. No mention of other issues at all.

The net is a huge resource. Way better than 4 years ago when I was doing the research. Theres no excuse, really.

Like I said, I think you were a little "flamey" but I completely agree with your assessment with the given information. If you didn't call her on it, then the impression is left there isn't a problem with ditching your contract...I admire people who will stand up and say while there are reasons to leave, you singed a contract and the school has a right to certain expectations especially when the OP implied it was a housing issue.

Sure the actual situation is different but could have been presented in a better light and you may have responded a little softer.

I think chronicpride's "scolding" of you falls into about the same level as your "flaminess" so take it for that... Wink

Upon re-reading the tone and wording of my replies(with exception of my last one, where I regretably lost my cool) and compared to his tone and wording of the original post in question, I respectfully disagree with your vantage point. Flames are distinguished moreso on their content, not so much because they are simply a reply in a debate. See a Gord vs. Grotto thread for further example of flame content.

As for the avatar thing, I'm the furthest thing from being tech-savvy, so I'd be happy to re-size, if someone can PM me a link on where I can do that. Otherwise, it'll be coming down after 10 days, anyway. Smile

I didn't ask for advice on whether to leave my job or not. I asked for advice on the immigration situation. The reason that I said that I had had no problems with school was to say that I have a good relationship and I think that they will give me my release letter.
I appreciate the support from some, I probably won't post again though. I really didn't expect that reaction from some people. It's not been an easy decision for me to make.

Okay, original point of post is officially shot out the window. Time to start making some points.

turtlepi1 wrote:

For all we know, the housing issue could have been part of the contract. Assuming that the housing issue and contractual obligations are completely unrelated is still assuming.

So it's up to everyone else to decide the manner in which I post? Whoa. That's a pretty sweet way to look at it.

While I generally stay out of any arguments beyond a basic, factual issue, chronicpride was very careful in choosing what he said to remain mostly inoffensive and nonassuming. While I'm no fan of the politically correct, the conclusions that people will jump to on the internet know no bounds.

Still waiting patiently on that info for , Daechi.

Scott, the board's feedback up until the hiccup was very good and responsive. Peppermint and Ajumma's feedback was solid, to the point, and unprovoking, and that's what one might expect from most advice-givers here. Please don't let that one element overshadow that the overall board doesn't usually come off like that. Hence, why this was a motivating factor why I jumped in and carried my point so strongly, in hopes of avoiding that impression in the future.

Scott, all I said was that you should "suck it up" and finish your contract if you have no serious issues at work. You are being awfully touchy.
