Howdy folks, I got here several months ago. I'm from the US (west coast) and am a little homesick. Are people interested in getting together?

minjokmanseh:

Be sure to check out this thread:
http://www.eslcafe.com//forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=4661

These events are turning into somewhat regular happenings (every two months?). Come and make some friends. Don't worry about fitting in or "cliques" - we all barely know each other as it is, but the last one was a lot of fun. Newcomers are most welcome.

Hope we'll see you there!

Ahh, how sweet. "newbie seeks friends". Post up your picture and details along with hobbies and interests and I might think about it.
Do what i did when i first got here. Brave the bars of Itaewon and make casual conversation with people who look or sound interesting. Mind you there aren't many. However, the idea of mail ordering instant friends is a little pathetic to me.

If you were a little less obnoxious I might've considered posting my picture etc. - if I had any time left over after "mail ordering instant friends". Try posting without being rude.

Ok, minjomakseh, apologies for my knee jerk caustic remarks...! But i do stand by my opinion...
Its just funny how foreigners are generally unfriendly/wary when meeting other teachers on the streets here (real people in the flesh), yet will happily agree to setting up a weekend with complete strangers, cyber people they've never met before.
I've done things like this before, of course people aren't the angels they sometimes portray on internet, etc. I enjoy the exchange of opinions on here, but I personally probably wouldn't go out my way to meet someone socially who was a complete stranger and the only thing we had in common was being a teacher.
I arrived here last year knowing nobody. i'm proud to say i didn't post up ads for new mates but went about it (what I would cosider more bravely) by hanging out in bars or just being outgoing..it was always appreciated.

Rapier you sound like you have it made, good for you.

But your comments were a bit out of line. I'm generally a very outgoing person but, I hate just trolling the bars by myself looking for friends. Probably because I'm far more likely to get some creep trying feel me up then make friends. So for a newbie/someone with an attack of homesickness the social scene in seoul can be rather intimidating.

Yes, you need to be reasonably outgoing and just give it a go in order to survive in another country instead of sitting at pc bang advertising for friends. But the 'I'm so cool you should just get with the programme' attuide sucks.

I wouldn't troll bars in Itaewon. Are you in Korea to make western friends. One of the best things I ever did in my life was make Korean friends. There happen to be a lot of Korean people in this country conveniently. Get to know the real Korea. I'd be happy to make a new friend. I could show you a lot of the real Korea. How old are you? I'm from Oregon. PM me.

Just about anywhere in Itaewon is good...

Gecko's is packed full of GIs, but usually you'll find some teachers. They are usually of the female persuasion more than the male.

3 alleys & Seoul Pub are more teachers than GIs

to go dancing or to pick-up chicks, you go to Hongdae....and there are soooooooo many clubs there, you're bound to find one that fits your fancy....I prefer sk@ but my friends hate it and drag my ass to Stompers....

Hey, you just described me!!!

Actually, I've been back and forth to Korea enough times to have alot of old friends lingering around all over Seoul and other places at this point.. so really, I'm probably like this as well that I don't really care or need to meet yet another foreigner if I don't see them right in my own backyard kind of thing..

But something is completely different about the Internet.. mainly because you do see these people all the time.. lets face it.. this is yet another community, know what i mean? just like your community of family, the community of teachers you work with, the community of friends you hangout with on weekends, the community of people you hangout with when you go back home, the community of your old co-workers from past employers, etc.. this is yet anyone one.. whereas Joe Wae-Gook SaRam you see on the subway 40 minutes from your house isn't really someone you have any connection with, sorry to say.. (not that they couldn't)..

Actually, recently, some korean girl i met asked me if i'd call some new foreigner who lives out in Incheon (i live in Seoul), and she wanted me to hangout with him because he was lonely.. i had to politely decline and say i couldn't because if he's in Incheon, he's going to have to find his own social of network of friends out there.. anyhow, basically, i got enough other stuff going on for that..

But ESL community.. i'd be into that of course!

So I guess you have issues with the outspoken majority on this board who get together for their occasional social gathering. I guess you would never be caught dead at one of these pissers huh?

SparX: probably not. For me, the chatline is all about honest exchange of information, not making pals. If I was going to meet all of you regularly on a social basis, that would inhibit me on here and I'd have to watch what I said. I don't want to avoid criticising whoever because they're 2 feeet taller than me and might whack me at the next waygook bash.

Whoa, dude, chill. You can have an honest exchange of ideas and still be able to meet people in the flesh - it ain't always what you say but rather how you say it, and whether you give people the impresion that you're willing to listen and consider other views besides your own ... and I think that's probably the best kind of discussion forum to have, personally.

Being polite to people you might one day meet in person is not a big conflict with being able to express yourself and share an opinion. However, if you like being rude to people here, you might also enjoy doing it at one of our bashes, so in that case I'll suppport you decision to abstain from them.

Cool
