I'm looking to buy a friends Toshiba laptop. P3, 6 gig HD, external dvd, card bus adapter, 11 inch screen and XP Pro (in Korean). http://www.toshiba-europe.com/computers/products/notebooks/portege3440/photo.htm

What do you think this is worth in the market (it's 4 years old) (he wants 450 000 for it) and what's available out there worth considering for cheeeep?

What does it cost to get XP in English installed and where can I get it done?

Don't buy that laptop, its both way out of date and way overpriced.

When my two year old Toshiba laptop gave up the ghost this past summer, I got a mid range brand new desktop build for around 500,00 ( I had a cracked copy of Win XP aready)

It's a PIII 500Mhz; you wont be able to play any newer games and I doubt it will handle watching video CDs very well. It doesn't have a (edit: nevermind, just re-read the OP) R/W, nor does it have USB 2.0 so you won't be (or rather shouldn't be) buying external optical or hard drives to make up for its deficiencies. 11" screen is is pretty tiny. With a 6GB drive you won't be doing much downloading or installing a great whack of software.

In short, if all you want is to be able to get email, surf the net, and do some word processing it'll do it for you, but it won't do it all that fast, and it'll do very little else.

450,000? He should be so lucky to get that much for it from a 'friend'.

Yeah. Unless you only want to do the most basic things why buy an old machine.

The Hyunju chain of computer shops are doing up-tp-date desk-tops for 500,000. PC's with specs that will blow that ole' laptop away!!

It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Another thing: I don't think a PIII 500 was a state of the art laptop 4 years ago- I'm guessing it was average to low-end; You can't buy an average laptop and then expect to get any sort of decent re-sale value for it 4 years later. Your friend should have gone out and bought the best he could afford... but hey, easier said than done. He'll just have to live with the reality that all pc owners live with- a 4 year old computer isn't worth very much regardless of how much you paid for it new.
