Of course there is nothing with bragging rights. Every country and everyone does it. And that is fine. No different in korea. But I dont see Canada tooting their horn everyday over something, nor do I see Japan blowing their own horn day in and day out like koreans.
Koreans take it to the extreme it seemsand then some. |
Taken from the Edmonton Journal Online edition today:
"Canadian observers in Ukraine prepare for hard work, "uplifting experience"
"Canada has chance to strike gold in tournament made larger by NHL lockout"
"Canadians shoot down sputtering Finns"
"Calgary's Ames doubles Canadian contingent at 2005 Masters"
"Canada moves up five places to No. 90 in year-end world rankings"
"Knowing too much can breed inaction" - er...how did that get in there?
It happens everywhere people. I've always felt Canada was one of the worst offenders at blowing our own horn because we have this inferiority-superiority dichotomy with our BIG neighbor to the south. That Korea does it as well isn't surpising. That we expats, who chose to come here, live here, and make our living here, are so sensitive about it is surprising.

Just reading these examples, they don't read the same as the Korean ones. "Canadian observers in Ukraine prepare for hard work, "uplifting experience", if this was like the Korean paper, it should read, Canadian superheroes invade the Ukraine and prepare for hard work"
I think you're right with the next two hockey posts though. If there is one thing that Canadians, I feel, are too proud about it is ice hockey, a sport that is really only played in about 10 countries in the whole world. Not that I don't enjoy it. In my opinion it just gets way to much publicity.
"Canada moves up five places to No. 90 in year-end world rankings" When your country moves up to no.90 in the rankings, that is hardly worth blowing your own horn and it doesn't really sound like they are here. |

| Canada moves up to 90 in world rankings refers to the FIFA rankings. It is a comment on the sad, sad state of the Canadian national football program. |

You just watch your mout!!! That kind of talk should get you banned.
The Korea Herald December 22.
"Bush backs diplomacy on NK"
"Bourse probes stock pricing."
"Russia urges resumption of 6-party nuclear talks"
"Rival parties in last ditch efforts to normalize Assembly session"
Hardly blowing their own horn |

These examples are no different than the ones taken from the Canadian newspaper, atlhough I said the ones about hockey were. By "blowing their own horn", I take to mean sentences about countries or people that seem to be overpromoting themselves. Again, no evidence of that here. These simply state the facts as they are. Look at the original Korean headlines and you find the verbs "crushes", "seizes", "invade", "wave not slowing", etc, which paints a different picture. In fact, they almost sound militaristic or like Korea is out to conquer the world, that's why we say they are blowing their own horn, perhaps more than others. |

I find Arirang news to be the most harrowing example of what the OP cited. First 3 stories inevitably claims global domination of the Korean IT industry or somesuch with a second half story on the Korean Wave (which, btw I find to be the most bellicose peice on non-News ever). Having said that, Manlyboy and others are right about the Aussie media blowing their trumpet, the Murdoch press is full of "Aussie takes on World" stories. Back to the Arirang issue, I know they are there to promote Korea, but I would rather see a more balanced view. The only things I really like on that station are the Documentaries. Their shameless plugging of Kpop (and only the bland mainstream of Kmusic) is nothing short of an act of self delusion.]
Cheers

| With all those robots, you just KNOW they're going to come out with some really poor konglish style instruction manuals. |

You do know that I never said I didn't like hockey. I've been a big fan of the sport for a long time, inparticular one team. But growing up in Canadian schools and seeing little or no money being spent on other fine sports that I really enjoyed playing and watching as well was very disappointing to see. It is not surprising at all that Canada finishes so poorly in most other world sports. This is why Canadians have to promote how well we play hockey. When it is the only thing we're really good at as a nation, what choice have we. |
