This can still be a great thread, I promise!
Last night I had κ (I'm at work so I can type in Hangul), which was reeeeally good. I understand why Koreans spit so much. On the way home I let a few good ones rip. When in Rome...
Funny enough, I talked to my Mom last night and when I described κ to her she told me they went to a Korean resturaunt in near my home town and she had the exact same stew.
I figure every few days I'll go back to the same place and order something new. I took one of their menus so I'll be able to jot down some notes on it to what is what and take that with me. Oddly enough I went there last night intending to have Ұ but I couldn't find it on the menu. I thought it was a staple dish.
And I see there was no response to my response to Daechidong Waygookin which I assume is because my points were that good. |

Hm? It's one of those typical kimbap places, like 䳪 or õ, right? I guess everywhere's got variety in menus... Could be the type of meat you're looking for... I know sometimes it's called ҺҰ or just Ұ. They're not really as particularly good as straight-up homecooked Ұ, but still decent occasional kimbap restaurant fare.
Anyways, I'd reckon about 9/10 kimbap restaurants have some derivitave of it, and it's definitely worth a try when you get tired of whatever 3-4 items you have on cycle. |

Daechidong Waygookin: So far I've had , κ, ܹ and some generic , I'm not sure what kind because I couldn't read at all then and asked for it by name. I cook for myself a lot but I figure (especially at 3,000 won for a meal) I'll try two or three different dishes a week till I've tried everything.
Chillin' Villain: The place is (a?) õ. I might just ask for Ұ by name next time I'm there. |

õ is a pretty common restaurant chain. Interestingly enough, it's actually owned by the Moonies (the name means kimbap heaven).
BTW, your reading and writing seems to have come along really quickly. Congrats! |

Yes, I'm sure not irritating you with romanization was exactly the motivation he needed. |

Ah yeeaah, if you're eating at the õ, they've got Ұⵤ... Not too bad, either, but it's not a super-great representation of Ұ. Not even Ұ at all really. Sorta reminds me of the sukiyaki beef at those Edo fast-food places in the mall (without teriyaki sauce)... Give it a try though. It should be under the menu that way if I remember correctly- I ate at one of those franchises nearly every day last year.
So it's really owned by the Moonies, huh? I was actually using a textbook from б (Moonie School) a couple years back (amongst others- I'm a textbook junkie). It was actually semi-decent; didn't notice any indoctrination attempts anywhere, but y' never know what kinda tricks that guy has up his sleeve. Maybe there were subliminal messages embedded in the ink! |

Yes, I'm sure the only reason he learned to read and write Korean is so he won't annoy Mr. Holier-than-thou. |

It being a Moonies owned chain is just something I've heard, I can't swear to it 100%. They have a lot of business interests, though, so there's no reason to be too shocked. For example the McCol cola (cola flavored with barley ), and the Washington Times in America and the Se-Gye Il-Bo/ Ϻ newspapers are a couple of other examples.
I'm not a fan of the religion either, but they do make a damn good ̽ at õ. |

I actually spend the entire weekend studying Hangul to make sure I didn't offend anyone with my romanization!!! Many a sleepless night I spent worrying about it!!! (I'll say it again, I can sound out words, just not understand them, and my laptop can't write Hangul)
What are the Moonies? I mean I can infer they're a sect of some religion or other but I've never heard of them.
Some Jehovah's Witnesses came to my apartment a few days ago. I sort of wish I had recorded the "conversation" because it was pretty funny. No one here understands what Jewish means. Haha |

The Moonies is a nickname for the Re-Unification Church, a religion/cult founded and led by the Reverend Moon Sun-Myoung (sp?). I don't know a whole lot about them, but they are particularly famous for the Reverend Moon arranging marriages of his followers based primarily on their pictures, and then performing their wedding ceremonies as mass weddings of hundreds of couples.
They apparently have a pretty big following in Korea and abroad, including the US, and the church has a lot of money and a pretty big commercial empire, like I mentioned earlier. The Reverend Moon is also believed to have ties with the Pyongyang government as well, but the full extent is a bit of a mystery. They also have a fair bit of influence with the Republicans in the U.S.
Someone else is gonna come on and school me any moment, 'cuz to be honest I really don't know that much about them. |
