In a recent thread people were suggesting is Australia a fairly racist country. Nobody wants to hear that about their country and it certainly doesn't apply to everyone in the country if it is true.

It got me thinking once again about racism though. I will definitely put forth that if you were to sit in an "average Australian pub" (whatever that is) as someone from North America you would likely decide that Australians are quite racist. The way that minorities are talked about openly is less accepted in North America. (I think)

But because we have different ways of what is PC to say does this make us any more or less racist? (I don't know)

On the flip-side of this many of the Asian countries are also quite racist towards Westerners, but it isn't the same...we are still afforded privilege despite the way "they" look at us.

I remember in primary school and high school my teachers (in Australia) telling me that Australia is the most racist country on earth. What utter bunk!

Racial discrimnation in Australia is very rare, although I have been discriminated against by immigrants. One Korean was complaining about the 'racism' involved in his ineligibility to get permanent residence!

Whatever. All this 'racism' talk is nonsense.

I was once told that any country that has a conquered visible minority is bound to be more racist than other countries. This would include Canada, America, Australia, etc.

The reason I was told this was so was because people try to justify or rationalize their predominant race's past. If you look at Canada's past with the rez school problem, America with both indians and blacks and Australia with the aboriginees, this would put them at the top of the list.

I've never been to Australia so I can't comment first hand about racism, but I've heard that there is a real feeling of 2nd class citizenry about the aboriginal people. In Canada, I worked on a reservation for a while, and really experienced reverse racism for the first time. It was not a good feeling at all, but it did allow me to see how european decendent Canadians acted sometimes too. My experience with direct racism in America was when I lived down there for a year and coached football. One mother wouldn't let her son play when we had to travel to a black neighborhood because "he might get a disease".

But I think, although we can all recount stories of racism that we've seen or heard, the important thing is not to be a part of it.

Yes. When you have Lebanese gangs in Sydney raping young women of the majority ethnic group, I wonder if this is also covered by the rubric "Australia is racist".

I tried to use the countries that most eslers here are from...
Otherwise I would have included Germany and a mess of Eastern European countries ...and a mess of countries other than Japan that don't have a "white" majority..

This is one of the lamest polls around.

Every country is going to be racist towards another country, whether it is through war or total ignorance.

As an Australian who's tired of being asked why his country is so much more racist than others, even though I've found racism to be at least as prevalent in every other country I've been to, I refuse to be drawn once again into one of these debates. I'll save my energy for the next Korean I meet who will inevitably ask me this same friggin' question with a hint of smug accusation in his eye.

What prompts them to do that constantly do you think? Could they be imagining it? or maybe just having a laff?
