My American friend has a nose earring and the middle school girls she teaches are like "Did you ask your dad permission to get that nose earring?" "Err, no." Basically many girls in Korea can't get their ears pierced until they're in university. I do have one 11 year old girl, though, with her ears pierced. She likes to bring in her latest earrings and all her friends ooh and awww over her latest acquisition. Grrr.

Anyway, one day I noticed my 11 year old male student, James, has an ear pierced. Wow. That's highly advanced. Even in North America many parents might not let their 11 year old male child get an ear pierced.

Stacks of my high school boys had earings this semester, the latest fashion and whatnot. Surprisingly enough it seems the korean teachers weren't very observant as they would wear them in school. Used to piss me off no end. Threw a bunch of them out the window if I caught them wearing them, the earings that is, not the students.

I have noticed several of my elementary school students(boys) wearing earrings...nobody seems to give it a second thought!

What do you mean?

Of course students can't wear earings at school! Mate they have hair checks to make sure it isn't getting too long and are forced to cut it to the required length. As for school policy I am supposed to confiscate them and issue them a penalty card. However, I have my own unique way that is much more effective.

I thought you just had a personal thing against students with earrings. Elementary schools are much more relaxed about student's fashion. Now I see.

What sort of Draconian world are you living in? Must be nice not to have more important things to worry about.

Oh, I'm sorry if I offended your liberal idealogy newbie. I suppose you went to an alternative high school where you could smoke in class, wear purple mohawks and t-shirts that say F- you teacher. If you think having a dress code is draconian, well I suggest you get out more and experience reality.

I'll let you worry about all the really important things in life, like your weight loss.

I guess a boy wearing a small earring, seizing it, and trashing his property is one of those life shattering events we should really be worrying about... You've pointed us to the correct path. Can I honor you now in my home with a small shrine to your image and your hilariously original avatar? A dancing baby. I get it! Ha! Ha!

Maybe your school is run very strictly and you've managed to stamp out ever bit of bad behavior in the classroom, but in my book, a child wearing an earring in violation of school policy wouldn't raise my dander. If we're here to teach English and enculturate them into a western life style, it seems in keeping. I would be more concerned with kids talking, doing other work in class, and playing with their cell phones/game de jour.
