How is the weather in the winter months (July-August)? How are foreigners (and I mean Koreans or Asians in this case) accepted? is it a liberal city or a red-neck one? What fun things are there to do in Brisbane or the surrounding area? How easy is it to travel around OZ?

Seems like my wife may get the chance to go there to study for 6 weeks and Id get my vacation at that time too, so would be cool to see Australia and so some travelling.

If you want to give me a detailed list of questions....just Pm me.

It is my hometown. Well, the Gold Coast is but close enough.

How is the weather in the winter months (July-August)? A little cool at night but the days are like the autumn here.

How are foreigners (and I mean Koreans or Asians in this case) accepted? No problems generally. Brisbane has a large Asian(and Korean poulation) but there is some problems with Triad gangs in the inner city. However, for tourists, this won't even be a factor

is it a liberal city or a red-neck one? Both, depends on where you go

What fun things are there to do in Brisbane or the surrounding area?A lot, PM me for details. It is the tourist capital of Australia for Australians

How easy is it to travel around OZ?
I think you are Canadian so it is pretty comparible to there.

Give me a Pm like i said for more.

brisbane itself is pretty boring. it's a nice enough city with the river running through it and the weather is always warm. but it's the gold coast an hour south and the sunshine coast an hour north and the hinterland areas west that are the best things to see there.

i work and live in brisbane mon-thurs but as i soon as i'm done on thurs. afternoon i head straight to my mum's place on the gold coast and surf and swim all weekend.

brisbane is a nice enough city in truth. it's just that i'm from the coast so with only a river, brissy just doesn't excite me. but southbank and some other places are nice and for 6 weeks you could find plenty to do and see.

My brother says it's a nice dry heat (compared to humid Korea, or Brisbane), and wicked ocean breezes every afternoon, which cools things down.

Fish is ridiculously expensive, which doesn't make sense (cooked fish that is).

Funny story: my brother had to hitch a ride from his first day at work in Perth. A guy picked him up and worked his way around to asking the question "do you wanna come back to my place and I'll shout you a bong?" My brother ain't much of a stoner, so he probably hesitated, so the guy quickly added "and if you like, I'll suck your deeeck while we're at it" Shocked

I still doubt him when he claims he rejected this offer Laughing

Brissy should be pretty safe for Korean... hope so... I'll be taking my wife up there to meet my brother in late January - before I head for dreaded Han Guk Crying or Very sad .

Well, pretty much what everyone else said about Brissie.

I don't know about the triad gangs in Brisbane, never heard of them. There is a HUGE Asian population in Brisbane, particularly the city and Fortitude Valley. Your wife will find Korean shops in both the city and the valley.

Yes Brisbane can get a little boring but it is a Beautiful city and a lot more laid back then Sydney or Melbourne. The public transport is a bit iffy though, and in non-peak times, she may wait for a bus or train for 30 minutes.

I have lived in Brisbane for the last 15 years so I know it like the back of me hand. Have a look at this website and it will tell you everything you need to know about Brisbane in Hangul www.living.net.au

Need any other help just PM and I will gladly help you.

About 3 years ago there was a big shoot out in West End where the coppers had rounded up triad members and some Vietenamese.

It was all drug running and they raided a lot of homes out the back near Ipswich as well.

As I said though, to the casual tourist this will mean jack-all.

Exactly. That's gonna have zero effect on a tourist... they'd be more incline to carve each other up... and maybe the odd jewellery store owner.

But I think his concern was more along the lines of some rubber-necking occa taking exception to an asian walking down his One Nation street. Possible, but no more likely there than anywhere else. Despite 'popular' opinion, blatant or overtly offensive racism is heavily frowned upon throught Aus. Particularly in major cities.

I'd go. Particularly around winter time. Summer there's a stinker, don't go then... oh, bugger Sad

Ahh yeah, I remember that now....down in West End....near the Souths football oval. It was at a restaurant which is now closed. If I remember correctly, they used a machettes (sp) more so than guns....

Yeah the average Asian tourist will have no problems, but of course will have to use common sense when venturing out at night...

It's a great place as many posters have said. The Roma street parklands are awesome and great for a picnic. Gold Coast is good for the theme parks and that's it. Go north to Noosa, Bundy and up to the reef. Easy to get around, go out to Ipswich and ride an old steam train. Ferries up and down the river are a good way to spend an hour or two. The markets on the weekend are great. Mt.Cootha and the gardens are excellent. There is a lot to see and the Brisbane City bus tours are good. You can take a train to Helensvale on the Gold Coast and then jump a bus. I'm a Melbourne boy, but lived in Brisbane for 20 plus years. It's not a bad town. Smile

Just my 2 cents worth, as a native Briz-vegasite. Compared to Sydney and Melbourne it is less urbane and cosmopolitan, but its mainly an issue of economies of scale. That being said, areas like West End, the Valley, New Farm and Sunnybank are very multicultural/trendy. I like to spend my saturday mornings on Boundry street outside a cafe (which you can do almost all year round) reading the papers and people watching. There is alot of great shopping, walking around the inner city and CBD as well as lots of wide open spaces for bbqs and the like. Lots of sporting activity every weekend with major Rugby, league, soccer, AFL and cricket teams based there as well as a decent little music scene (dont forget powderfinger are from Bris). Vietnamese food is the way to go with cheap BYO dining (Kim Than in West End is my pick) plus nightlife across the spectrum. You are only 2 hours or less from some of the worlds best beaches (forget the Gold Coast, well over rated) viz North of the Maroochy river and Northern NSW. That is without mentioning the proximity to sub-tropical rainforrest areas like Mt Nebo and parts of Northern NSW, which are truelly unique. Uni of QLD, QUT and Griffith Uni are all well regarded and offer a good range of courses. Most of all, rent and transport are considerably less than southern states. Its this factor that I think gives Brisbane the edge. Finally, the weather in summer is almost unbearable, but you are never far from a beach/pool/airconditioning.

Cheers

to the posters saying don't bother about the gold coast beaches coz they're overrated, why do you say so? i really don't get anyone saying they aren't that great etc etc.

earlier i said i hit the goldy on the weekends to escape brisbane, but i really go down to tweed heads. i didn't write tweed coz i thought the OP wouldn't know it. my point being that i have no reason to defend the gold coast as such. moreover, i'm originally from cronulla in sydney so i've always grown up surfing and around beaches.

so coming from cronulla, which is beautiful, and living in tweed/coolangatta, which is beautiful, i have been very lucky. yet i still love going up to surfers for a coffee, swim, drink or whatever now and then. i think the beaches up there are brilliant.

i really don't get why anyone puts the goldy down, including my mum and friends etc. it seems everyone puts the gold coast/surfers paradise down yet whenever i go there i look around and think, how could people not think this is beautiful?

just curious.....

@ korian - yr mum probably puts the coast down coz (like me) she knew it years ago when it was quieter and less crowded. its still a great place - but it used to be idyllic. the north coast has a few more secluded spots still.

brisbane is one of the best capital cities in oz. my other favourite is darwin. brisbane is very green and these days has everything. the winter is mild - like seoul in the autumn. the summer is humid and pretty damn hot - but i like that. mosquitoes can be a problem, depending where yu are.

the bay is great - esp if you like sailing. lots of islands to explore and somke ok fishing. the hinterland includes some brilliant bush-walking, rainforests and mountain climbing. if yu are into rock-climbing there are natural wall climbs right in the heart iof the city at kangaroo point. you can even climb the story bridge - if yu don't get caught Wink

i can also recommend brisbane storm water drains - great fun to explore. biggest damn cockroaches i ever did see! Shocked

edit - first time, the idiotic swear filter beeped "cockroaches" so i bypassed it...

I don't like the Coast for all its sprawl and the overcrowding. I think the actual beaches themselves are pretty good, but something about Surfers makes my skin creep. I think Kingscliff, Cabarita, Fingal, Broken Head and the North Shore of the Maroochy river are as close to paradise as I have seen.

Cheers

I lived in Cabarita for 10 years and now my mom and dad live in Kingscliff. Very Happy

In my opinion it kicks the crap out of the Gold Coast, great waves and not too crowded. Nothing wrong with the Goldie, just like the waves to myself.
