|
|
I am going to meet someone for a day in Cheonan. We are in different places right now - I'll be taking the train and she will be taking the bus (from Gongju or somewhere).
I have never been to Cheonan and want to know where the train and bus stations are in relation to the main shopping area, or 'downtown' I guess. And what is there??
My friend is only over here for January taking a camp and won't have a cell phone and can't speak or read Korean, so I'm trying to figure out where we should arrange to meet, blah blah blah...
I've tried searching for a map on the internet but nothing helpful...
Any info is appreciated! |

| The bus terminals are in a department store, in the downtown areas, and the train station is a short hop away- as for the rest- ask zyzyfer |

Bus stations are both right downtown. There's a big, easy-to-find Burger King that I usually meet people at when meeting there, or you can just meet in front of Yawoori or McDonald's.
The train station is in the "old" downtown area, which is still functional but definitely old as well. 15 minute walk to the bus station if you know where you're going, or a 10 minute taxi ride (bad traffic).
Cheonan isn't a very thrilling city in and of itself, but there is a nice Buddhist temple (name escapes me) and some hiking trails to the east. Southwest you can find Hyeonchungsa, but it's far and probably not that beautiful in the winter.
Why Cheonan? |

Thanks Peppermint and Zyzyfer for the info.
Why Cheonan? Well, the friend didn't know exactly where she was going to be for this one-month camp stint (she only arrived in country yesterday) but figured the place was close enough to Cheonan, and I live in Pyeongtaek, so..
Anyway, she's just em'ed me and says she's closer to Daejeon so guess I'll be meeting her there instead (whew).
BTW, a colleague is always harping on at me to take the KTX from Cheonan-Asan to wherever! But from what I've been told, it's kinda hard to get to from Cheonan proper to C-A, no?? |

Is that during Cheonan rush hour, though? Sometimes it cost me 6,000 just to get to Ssangyongdong from the bus station. Or perhaps there's a better route when you're going all the way out there from the bus station. |

Cheonan-Asan Station is located to the south west of Cheonan proper. As you may remember, the western side of the city are the newer areas with all of that city planning, so the streets are wide and lacking in stop lights every few meters. Especially if you hit the road leading from the industrial park going south. So if you're going to the KTX station from the newer parts of town, then it's usually faster to take a taxi there than it is to the Yawoori or Cheonan Station.
Mind you, it takes little over an hour to walk from one end of Cheonan to the other, so in a way taking a taxi inside the city limits wastes money. I wouldnt try walking to the KTX unless you had the time to spend, though.
But all of this is unimportant since the lady is going to meet her chum in Taejeon. Which is a fairly nice city from what I know of it. |

I used to live by Bongseo Mtn, in Ssangyongdong, and while I never had to catch a taxi to where the station is, I've ridden by it on the motorsickle heaps of times on the way to Ryst's place or Asan. Ssangyongdaero is plump with traffic until you get past Carrefour, and then it can clear up, depending on time of day. But right around the bus station, it's nearly impossible to escape a 20-minute wait in traffic just to get to a big, happy road during rush hour. As you say, you can walk across it in an hour, but you can drive across it in two if you try to go through the center. You're right, though, from some areas you can get there quickly, but the question posed was in reference to going there from the bus station. And of course they're now meeting in Daejeon, which makes this all silly to talk about.
When I lived in Ssangyongdong, I'd usually head into town from the west, going by the stadium. Heaps faster. Stupid Cheonan traffic. |
