Hello...
Looking for a little advice on return airplane ticket issue.
I've extended my contract by two months, Feb and March. Making the return ticket my director bought for me invalid. I considered this back in November and warned my director to try and refund it before the date on the ticket. Since urgency and forsight never seem to be of issue at my school, he decided to do nothing about it (so the date on the ticket has passed and it is worthless). To make matters a little more confusing, I'm not going straight home, so I will not require a return ticket from Korea. So I proposed that my director give me the money for a one way ticket or at least 70% of it since I will still need to get home somehow. He has now taken the standpoint that he doesn't owe me the money for a ticket. Anyone else in a similar situation or have had to refund a return ticket? any suggestions?
Please help...
thanxs. |

i'm sorry to hijack this thread but this is a related issue....
i have been here for about 6 months now, and when i flew here i flew on a ticket that was sent to me, which cost almost 2 million won. That was in august of last year. At the time i thought the amount that my employer paid for the ticket was quite ludicrous and that he must be flying me first class or something. i was wrong. It was economy class, and so i'm left to wonder why the price of the ticket was so much.
My question is this: Is it possible that i was given a round trip ticket and i'm simply unaware of this...i still have the ticket, but the idea of asking my employer about this, whose english isn't the greatest, makes me uneasy because i don't want him to think that i'm trying to bitch about something...
this problem is strange, i admit, as it seems that i'm too stupid to discern whether the ticket is one-way or round-trip, but i haven't been able to get any help from anyone, and now the situation has gone on for so long that i'm embarrassed to bring it up to any korean friends.
In short, does anyone know what the average one-way ticket costs from Toronto to Incheon international.... mine was 2 million won or 2500 canadian...is this extremely unusual or is it just me....anyone have a similar occurance???
sorry again about having a question here, but i didn't see it as appropriate to start a new thread since we both have similar questions.
thanks...t. |

No, but I had a bad experience with short-term extensions. I thoroughly believe that, unless you have an amazing rapport with the director and all other leading staff, signing a short extension is a risky venture.
You're pretty much up the creek without a paddle. Maybe an older hand has better advice, but mine is to not do short, 1 or 2 month extensions. |

That would most likely be a round-trip. |

Betty -- I think you're proably SOL there. Most places that offer return fares would balk at switching that for two one-way tix with different itineraries. The most he would "owe" you, I would think, would be transportation to your point of origin. Your proposal sounds fair, but if nothing compels him to pay (contract?), he probably won't. If you think you've been wronged, you can stiff him and take off, but I imagine your last month's salary (and severance?) is worth substantially more than a one way ticket from Korea!
Tancred -- I recently bought a one way ticket FROM Edmonton to Seoul for $645 plus taxes. But I just did a search on Expedia, which is a good way to find the HIGHEST possible fare, and it is indeed possible to spend upwards of CDN$3000 on a one way ticket from Seoul to TO if you're a fool or you have to leave the next day. |

My return ticket from Australia was W 3.1 million (yeah $4500 OZ dollars) can you believe it and economy class with K#*#@* Air so my work now knows they got 'stiched-up' BIG time, by their RECRUITER, (Their first experience with western teacher and ticket.) Now I've signed up and am into second 12 mth. contract and they were told to ring the airline etc...........being Koreans, as I got the run around (from airline) and it's in the contract........THEY were slack so after ticket had expired were offered Aud.$ 250- thats all. I had it written into my second contract 'Included one way airfare to Australia' which is the deal. You have to do this -WRITE IT INTO THE CONTRACT. I'll do this second contract and then another 5 months, then Bali(3 mths.) then home to teach in OZ to my high school Art job waiting for me. When ticket prices are that high, like mine was they got done.................no if's or but's............'done like a dinner.' They should have paid Aud.$ 1500-1800 return. That's Korean recruiters using a KOREAN travel company in Australia for you. Back to the Question..................I DON'T feel an extra 2/3 months is worth it if you have to pay your OWN way home. By the sound of your post you WON'T get the $ or ticket. There goes at LEAST 1 months savings..............as they say in Bali "Up to you!" |

a couple of weeks ago, my director and i were having a conversation, and he said that he had a purchased a round trip ticket for me. i was quite sure he was lying becos he would never spend more money that necessary. anyway, i got in touch with the travel agent, and she did confirm that it was a single trip. if u have any hassles, try and contact the person who made your flight arrangements, either the recruiter or travel agent. if its your employer, then i dont know..................cos u certainly aint gonna get the truth from him.
to the OP, sorry, but you should have done more to avoid this situation, its too late now, and not much you can do. |
